Life is Choices
|
As some of you know, I used a show last year as a fund raiser for a local (Northern California) horse rescue organization. My intent was to do this annually myself, but this year my mare Kasserine is in foal (to Happy Hour) and so we are out of the competition for a while.
The fund raiser we did was lots of fun and very successful, considering I did it alone. Lots of folks came to watch (more than I expected!!), we got good publicity, and it just placed a whole other level of "wonderful" to my amateur dressage efforts. (Plus Kasserine got lots of extra horse-cookies and carrots).
What I would like to do is throw out the challenge to any and all of you who are showing this summer, to dedicate ONE show as a fund raiser for the horse charity of your choice.
It's not hard to do. You just tell folks that you are going to dedicate a particular show, then tie their donation to your score. The general public understands this simple concept.
This is the website from last year's show if you want to check it out:

I would be happy to help with the administrative efforts if you want. I did figure out a few tips along the way to help you make it easier. I suggest that each competitor team up with a second person who isn't showing the same day, because there are mailings and phone calls to make, people to visit with. I did do it all alone last year, so it is possible. But an extra pair of hands can always be useful.
There are a lot of organizations out there that can use your support, and I'm sure you are familiar with those in your state. I picked The Phoenix Foundation not only because they rescue horses, but they work very hard at placing horses in a Handicapped Riding Program, so both equines and humans alike are helped.
And there are the National research organizations. One of my favorites is Morris Animal Foundation.
I like the idea of Trakehners, who were rescued after WWII, helping to rescue horses today.
So take a look at your calendar, pick a show, find a partner, send me an email and I'll be happy to help you get started.
