I'm researching the Trakehner breed and would like to know how many mares a young ( 3 to 8 year old ) stallion could cover live in one season? How does this compare to a more experienced stallion?
What about frozen semen? How many mares could be bred AI by the frozen semen of a stallion in one season?
Thanks, Beth

TB stallions are only alowed to live cover, and can do several dozen mares a season. It really depends on the horse, though. If he's being ridden as well as bred, you may not be able to stand to as many mares due to show shcedules and keeping his weight up. It's not that big a deal for many stallions to breed once almost every day, and occasionally twice. Of course, if you use AI, you have the possibility of covering many more mares, because one collection can usually be divided among two or more mares. Realistically, though, in the American sporthorse stallion market, you're doing very well to get 10 or 15 mares a year, which should be no problem for a fit, young stallion.
