Modern type of trakehner
« on: August 26, 2003, 06:09:59 AM »

Hi all

In anticipation of taking my mare for grading next year, I went off to watch this year's (UK) mare grading last weekend, to learn about what happens and to listen to the comments.

I was curious about what defines a "trakehner of the modern type"- a comment passed on a couple of mares in particular (one of them defined as a modern type was a sixtus mare: of particular interest to me, as mine is a sixtus mare as well).

Can someone educate me?

thanks

Hi Carol,
We didn't meet, i don't think  - but i was the one on the microphone for most of the day...!

I know others will correct me if I'm wrong  Grin, but i always take "modern type" to mean more refined, more athletic in build - perhaps a little less deep in the body and with proportionately longer legs and finer limbs. People often associate it with more TB blood, but it isn't necessarily so. Conversely, "old fashioned" is smaller, with heavier legs and a deeper body.

There were some excellent mares there this weekend and the judges were very impressed about the standard we are breeding in the UK. It isn't surprising really given how many top mares have been bought by UK Breeders over the last 10 years or so.

Hope you enjoyed it and are looking forward to bringing your mare forward next year!

Thanks tamsin

You did a great job on the microphone.. I just lurked at the back as a newbie!

Thanks for the info. I shall pay more attention to this now. Does grading favour "modern" over ""older" type?

There seemed to be all sorts of types there on Saturday- I was fascinated to see the two mares placed first and second, as they seemed (to my uneducated eye) quite different even though both by Honeur- (guess mums influence was stronger?)

And I am currently researching my mare's history and can't see a particular trend (at least in the piccys I have).. though maybe she's atypical being about 1/3 shagya.

Hopefully I will bring my mare next year- it was the plan for this year, but she went and scuppered it by fracturing a lump off her pastern bone (within the fetlock joint)  Sad and having to have surgery. Now on box rest, but keeping our fingers crossed.  I guess if she doesnt come sound, we will just have to have babies!

Hi Carol,

I think they do use "modern type" as a compliment, if that is any help! Yes, it was interesting how different the 2 mares were (for anyone who wasn't there - 2 black/dark brown mares both by Honeur - one 170cm, one 159cm - but both were superb movers with a lot of hind-end power!)

Your mare's breeding sounds really interesting.... Do tell us more! Where did you get her from? Sorry to hear that she is sick at the moment - fingers crossed for a quick recovery...

All i would say is that IMHO, if you can, take the mare for grading before she has her foal. I personally found it much harder to see the movement of the mares with foals at foot (- becuase they are always looking for the foal or the foal gets in the way). The judges are very experienced at looking past it, but especially if movement is your girl's best attribute I wouldn't risk it bieng hidden!! I took one with foal at foot and one without (if you went last year, she was the TB who was Reserve Champion - brag, sorry!) - and i think without does help them...

Are you going to come to Neumunster in October - that is the best place to "get your eye in" - 55 stallion candidates and lots of mares for sale and also all the best mares of the year for the mare championships...

Anyway, do tell more about your mare!! And thanks for the compliment!!

Hi Tamsin

I am sorely tempted by Neumunster- but I'm just starting a new course (mid life career change!) so it will have to be a last minute decision....depending on how much work I have to do.

My mare (Nadja) is by Sixtus (obviously a little bit of Shagya influence through Burnus/Lapis/Fenek V) out of a mare called Naomi. Naomi is by EH Bartholdy out of a Shagya mare (state champion and TK approved) called Nadine (herself by Nasrallah (ShA) out of Ayda (ShA)- good article on Ayda on the net somewhere). I believe Nasrallah was also TK approved. So all in all that makes Nadja about 1/3 Shagya.

I bought her (knowing not a lot about trakehners, but being interested in a TK/arab mix for endurance) just from an ad in H&H. It transpires that Naomi was imported from Germany (I believe by Liz Horn), already in foal with Nadja- originally bred by Sylvia Bahner who owns Nadine (and also sold Maren her horse, it transpires!). I think Liz was interested in Naomi's unusual blood lines as a cross with Va Tout.. but for reasons I don't understand sold her.. I belive Naomi has had some Va Tout babies since.

Since getting her I've been fascinated to learn about trakehners (and to realise that Nadja does have some unusual blood lines!). I'm now hooked- may have to acquire another one soon! I do quite like the TK/ShA mix, I have to say...

BTW did either of the stallion candidates succeed?

cheers
