Ashley--you'll love this answer.  It depends----of course on the fertility of the stallion and donor mare, and also that of the recipient mare.  I have two embroyo transfers on the ground--successful after one cover--and another mare in foal which took us twice--everyone should be so lucky.

I think the chances for success are greatly enhanced by a veterinarian who has a lot of experience in this procedure.  After carefully looking around, I chose a farm and vet who are heavily into the procedure--and did not ask them to attempt to cycle one of my mares as a recipient--but rather let them chose one from their herd.

It's an expensive procedure, and although I know it's hard, I think you should be governed by your head rather than your heart before attempting it.

Best of luck on whatever you decide.

From what I hear, Mae Jean Fitcher in Lexington, KY is also doing a lot of embryo transfers this year. You may want to drop her a line/call to get her input.

Now this is only my opinion - but the thing i personally object to with embryo transfer is people who do it to get 3-5 foals on the ground in one year from one mare. Personally i think that's like factory farming. It seems to be getting quite popular to do this in the UK and I hate it....

I know some registries (eg UK Trakehners) will only accept a maximum of 2 foals per mare per year (becuase she could herself carry twins) - which I 100% agree with.

I think I'm right in saying that in Germany it is still very rare, becuase they simply don;t think it's worth it.....

I would love to be able to do embryo transfer as I have a very athletic Falke daughter that can't carry to term.  After two years and a reproductive specialist, we were able to get her pregnant but she lost the foal between 45 and 75 days.  I had already pretty much run low on funds to do it but, I asked the repro specialst about it and, as I recall, he said the complication was getting the two mares in sinc so actually do the transfer.  He actually recommended having two potential recipient mares.  I just couldn't do it cost wise even though I have a mare who would be a wonderful recipient mare.  The costs can vary depending on how many attempts it takes, how long the two (or more) mares need to be boarded at the clinic, and any other complications that may arise.
