I have a question for folks. Do you think that the average of the sire/dam's height is more predictive of a young horses final size or the height the young horse is at, say, 15 months? 18 months? 2 years? etc? I have a gelding who is not quite 15 months old and is is 15.1 hands plus. What height do you think he will end up? I know from his bloodlines, averaging the sire and dam, where he should be, but I am curious what poeple have to say on the issue.
many thanks

I go more by the phenotype. Many people think that if you breed a 16 hand mare to an 18 hand stallion you should get a 17 hand offspring. That rarely happens. Look at the foal, does it most resemble mom or dad? Babies tend to follow one parent's phenotype. If it looks very much like mom, chances are that it is going to be close to mom's size. If it looks more like dad, it is likely it'll be close to dad's size. My filly is the spitting image of her dam and it looks like she is going to be almost exactly her mom's size. Looking at phenotypes seems to be pretty accurate.

Gee, my filly looks like her "Auntie Bri." It's amazing. That info does help, however. My filly is built more like her sire and is approx. 11.2 at 2 months so I suspect she will be close to his 16.3 height rather than her dams 16 hands.
My other mare (Auntie Bri) is 15.3. Her dam was 16 and her sire was 17. Go figure.
