I LOVE Trakehners!
|
My friend has just bred her TB mare to a young Trakehner stallion, I am interested in the upcoming foal and was wondering what you could tell me about the stallions bloodlines. Thanks. The stallion's name is Verwandtemond by Polarmond out of Vorfreude by Marduc out of Vanessa. I have the fourth generation if that would be helpful. I have a picture of him. Please feel free to critique. I hope the attachment works.

Polarmond was approved by the German Verband Oct, 1981 , at Neumunster. The comments from the German Trakehner Stallion Book are "A gray with the largest possible frame and significant lines. Weighty body and medium strong foundation. Very far-reaching energetic way of going. Much presence." He was imported June, 1982. He is of Family No. 19 - Polarfahrt 693 (Main Stud Trakehnen)
Vorfreude was imported as a yearling in 1983. According to the OSB Vol III (foals through 1995) she has had 4 colts and 2 fillies through 1991. Since she was before the mare inspection was required, there are no comments on her. She is of Family No. 288 - Vera 1519.
I did not find this young stallion listed on the ATA website as approved. If registration (and/or possible approval as a breeding stallion/mare) of the future foal are important to you, I would check with the ATA on his status.
Meager info at best, but I hope it helps.
Take care, Eileen I'm a relative newbie, and my info is limited to the books I have.

Thanks for the info. Were you able to see the picture? What did you think of his conformation. My friend says his temperament is spectacular. I don't think he is approved yet. I'm not sure, I don't really know anything about him.

Yes, the picture came through nicely. I am not a judge. He looks lovely, still very young and immature.

I did make an assumption that you know that Marduc is a very desirable stallion. He has a number of stallions approved by the ATA and in Germany. I would suggest you run through the approved stallions on the ATA website as I don't wish to offend anyone by not listing their stallion. Several very nice stallions come to mind without even trying and I'm sure there are lots more as well as lots of mares.
Take care, Eileen

Lots of substance. How old is he, and how tall?

He is a very nice looking boy, however, I do see some conformation faults. I have a beginner's eye, so all you experts chime in if you don't agree.
The most noticeable is that he is back at the knee on the left front foreleg. I can't see the right to evaluate. He also looks to be "standing under."
His rear looks camped out and toed out, but it is hard to tell if he is just "standing funny."
He has a nice neck set and saddle position, but I would like to see more rear engine.
I can't see his throat latch, but I assume it is nice since his neck seems to be clean. Personally, I would prefer bigger nostrils (but that is me being picky).
He looks to be in excellent health and has a nice shiny coat.

I like Polarmond as my friend Nicole Lyons owns & trains a gelded son of his who did very well at a Santa Barbara show not long ago (see my previous posts). However, you should be aware that there may be some drwbacks on buying foals out of non-approved stallions. Having said that after Looking at his picture he looks very nice, but how tall is he? If you like Polarmond, why not buy one of his get. You shall find Nan very easy to deal with, and I do agree with Eileen if you like the Marduc line you can contact the owners of the following stallions:
Elite Hailo (Anduc (by Marduc)-Thor-Intermezzo) Impressionist (Hailo-Mackensen-Neuquen xx) Monte (Hailo-Artic-Tannenberg) Happy Hour (Induc (by Marduc)-Erzsand-Schabernack) Mendelssohn (Marduc-Schoener Abend-Loretto) Zulu MV (Herzzauber (Marduc)-Karat-Prusso) and the Elite Herzzauber (Marduc-Radom-Erzsand)

The only Verwandtemond by Polarmond I could find is registered as an American Sport Pony. So, with regard to a nother posters query on height, the stallion is probably pretty small.

I know he is five and I THINK my friend said he was about 16h. I will double check to make sure. He belongs to a friend of hers, and she said he had been taken to the two year old approvals, but I'm not sure with which registry. I see if my friend knows. Actually, I wasn't really looking to buy anything right now, my friend just had said if her mare has a colt she was going to give him to me. So that being the case I was interested in the bloodlines and what you thought of him. I guess they brought him to a horse expo a while back and he behaved himself admirably. My friend says he has a wonderful temperament. Thanks for all the replies.

Got some more info on the stallion. He is approved for the American Sport Pony association.
He was a twin, that is why he is small. I misinformed you. It is the mare that is 16h. HAHA My friend is after the stallion's owner to remeasure him as he has grown and to try and get him approved with the ATA. The vet says the size genes are still in there so the foal should be larger. My friend says he is about 15h now. Maybe a little larger. What is the minimum height for the ATA?

From the ATA Handbook:
Part II. Registration Article II. General Registration Standards
"The recommended minimum size requirements for stallions as two and one-half-year olds are 15.3 hands in height with a heart girth of 72 inches and a cannon bone of 7.5 inches."
If your friend is going to try for ATA approval, it would probably be desirable to bring some of his offspring to the approvals to show his ability to produce better than himself.
I don't own a breeding operation, but I have been to several ATA annual meetings. They recommend bringing offspring of the mares, so I would assume that they could give some consideration based on the stallion's offspring as well. BUT, I MIGHT BE WRONG.
At the inspections, he will have to go through a vet check, flexion test, hard surface test, free jumping test, in-hand on the triangle, and at liberty. It is very grueling and requires much preparation. The stallion should be shown to his best advantage so hiring a professional handler might be necessary.
The inspection schedule is on the ATA website www.americantrakehner.com along with tips for preparation.
The annual meeting and central stallion/mare inspection is in Seattle this year Nov. 6-8 or 9. You might want to attend a stallion inspection first so that you see how it works.
Hope to see you there and good luck.

Performance Matters!

I agree w/the earlier post; the stallion owner should go to an inspection to learn as much as possible about the process. I believe a stallion must meet minimum height requirement (this is WITH shoes) to be considered. I'm not aware of any ATA-approved stallions under 15.3h.
Best of luck!

I bred Verwandtemond and can tell you that he was a twin, which is why he is small. He was tiny at birth, but very strong and was really no trouble to raise. He did have a great temperament and beautiful movement, especially in his front end. He has a full brother who is 17.3 with a great temperament also. His mother is out of Vanessa, mother to VanDeyk, who is a top winning horse in Germany. Vorfreude was seen by Pat Donig and bought sight-unseen by Bill Bodard and Carole Wallace of Barr Trak Farm, and I was lucky enough to get her from them when they switched to Deutchreiter ponies. Verwandtemond was then sold as a youngster to Jana Wagner, who sold him to someone after he was approved as a Warmblood Sporthorse pony. I can't imagine him throwing ponies, however, as his mother is 16.1 and Polarmond is 16.3. I'm with Karim however, stick with get out of approved ATA stallions unless you are looking for a pet you plan to keep for life. If you get a filly, her breeding prospects are limited as far as getting registerable Trakehners out of her. If you get a great gelding, I guess it wouldn't matter as much. Nan

Thank you Nan for the information. If I did get the foal, it would be just for me, I am not interested in breeding. However, the foal would have to end up relatively tall as I am tall and have long legs. My friend really likes him, he has been at the stable where she boards for about a year I guess. She just raves about his temperament. I am interested in seeing what the breeding produces. Her mare is a VERY nice TB, so a nice Anglo-Trakehner should result.
Thanks again.
