My turn to share!!!
I took Mystic Ice, yearling stallion prospect (by Meistersinger*Ps* out of Imported Pinto Trakehner mare Manjana by Makar) out for his first show last weekend -Dressage at Lamplight in Wayne, Ill.
He was a real show-stopper, WINNING the Yearling Colts class on Friday and then again on Saturday. A lot of people had to stop to see him - shocked to learn that he is a Trakehner! (I will have to buy a t-shirt that says "NO, this is NOT an Art Deco colt!) He was hands-down the best behaved youngster there, and made a HUGE impression! For everybody who has been asking - here is a current pic from the show (Thanks to Tracy Weber!!)
ok, I give up! I can't seem to attach this after reading your tutorial twice! I will email it - can you attach it for me?

Hearty congratulations on your colt's success--and I'm glad someone besides me has a problem with the photo thing--makes me feel a little less incompetent.

Congratulations, it's so rewarding when the youngsters can go out and do so well, and especially at their first show! He sounds lovely, can't wait to see the pictures!

I don't seem to be able to get ahold of our "boss mare". She must be busy. Does anybody else have the ability to post a pic? I can email it to somebody, if you can help!

What a fabulous boy! He must have a good temperament to have allowed you to put in all those braids!

Thanks everybody for all your encouragement! (and Maren- yeah, he has "the butt" that all the horses from this line are born with - boy can they "sit"!)
Everybody - I need some input. My question to all of you: How do you all view the loud color? This is a big investment on my part to prepare this colt for the ATA approvals and promote and stand him as a stud. Don't get me wrong - he is going to be an upper level dressage horse "come hell or high water". But is there sufficient attraction among the Trak breeders in this country support all the expense and work involved in going through the Trak stallion approvals?
I have already spoken to two other breed registries, and they are very excited about him (especially because of the totally non-Samber lines), as he is definitely stallion quality - REGARDLESS of the color. But I am not sure of his appeal to Trak breeders.
My question is: How much interest is there among Trak breeders here for the Pinto color? If I were to stand him as a Trak stallion, and perhaps import a few Trak pinto fillies and another stallion prospect, with the intent of creating a small color breeding group - would people be excited about this?
Am I being silly in seriously considering this? Help? Comments? Please give me your thoughts about this!

Suzette-I'm very high on my Sabino colt--and I don't think color really matters--I know there are some who think that color is a disadvantage in the dressage arena--especially if it is lop sided and tends to make a horse look crooked--but performance is really what counts--and my instinct is that people really do love the splash---But heck--horse breeding is a crap shoot anyway--go with your instincts--as far as I can tell, they are as good as anyone in the business.

IMO, a quality horse is a quality horse. I see more and more "color" horses in the show ring here, at all levels of competition. There does seem to be quite an interest. I personally have only heard positive remarks and do know of people that specifically look for that added color.
If you feel that he is definitely stallion quality and this is something that you want to do, Go For It!! There is ALWAYS a market for Quality Horses.
Good Luck with him, he really is lovely!!

I think you should follow your passion. If you have an interest in pinto Trakehners, you should go for it! There does seem to be a significant amount of interest in the pintos, regardless of the breed.
I think there will always be people who are passionate for or against pintos just because of color. But, its the quality of the horse and what he can produce that are the important things. If you think he's got FEI potential and he's got the good conformation, then it seems to me that it would be worth your effort to get him ATA- and "other registry"-approved. Why not? I think you know what it means to maintain a stallion at home and at shows, so you would not be going into this blindly.

All else being equal, the color is a plus for me. It's great that he is full Trakehner, so should be very athletic. He looks very nice. I am sure we'll all be interested to see how he does at approvals.

Yes, it is PRECISELY because I know what is involved in maintaining and promoting a stallion that is causing me to think long and hard about this. I have NO doubt whatsoever that the horse has the ability to go FEI. He has a wonderful mind, fabulous athletic movement, and is a joy to work with. I know that I will have no difficulty training him myself (he is "all boy" already, but very reasonable about it), and competing him myself. I can handle the expense of the training and competing without difficulty. I have the facilities and the staff that have no problem dealing with "boy silliness" on a daily basis. Been there - done that. That part is no question.
If this horse was a plain, blah chestnut I would still feel he was an excellent stallion candidate. He has perfect legs, great performance bloodlines, and "the look of eagles". The question is whether the color will be well-received by the breeding public. Are enough people going to be interesting in breeding color?
I guess the answer is really "who knows?" The only way to find out is to try, I guess. Well, I have way too much of myself invested in this project to quit without trying anyway - we are going all the way regardless ! But I DO want to know how everybody feels about it!

While I think people are more opinionated about liking or disliking pintos, there sure seems to be many folks who are just as opinionated about greys. You should follow your passion.
If you can get the approvals and breedings you might do a great thing for the breed by pulling in new owners and members for the very reason that there is a developing gene pool of those paint genes in a high quality sport horse. I say "go for it".

Suzette if he is stallion quality, then he is needed in the breed (and in other breeds), as for the rest (breeders interest in him), let him draw his own crowd!

Suzette, your boy's a gem! I'm sure there will be a few folks who would not use him because of his color, just as some won't care about anything but his mind and performance record. And then there are others who will seek him out for his color. Go for it. Have fun, and best of luck with his career. Sounds like he's off to a roaring start.

He is gorgeous! Well, I for one, LOVE the color! Can I be the first one on the waiting list to breed to him when he gets approved? (Note, I said WHEN, not IF!) I would LOVE to have pinto babies in my field!
I wonder if the inspection team would hold all that color against him?

The more I see color on "nice quality" horses, the more I like it. I used to associate it with backyard cowponies, but not anymore. There are some show stoppers out there now in other breeds, why not trakehners too? Go for it!

Thanks for the great comments everyone!
I am pretty excited about this guy, and am going to have a lot of fun knocking people's socks off in the coming years!
I am also pleased to announce that his dam, Manjana, is confirmed in foal to Kreshendo*Ps* for an April 2004 foal! Manjana is homozygous for the Tobiano pinto gene, so it is also sure to be another pinto. Brenda is hoping for a filly this time. Oh, and in case anybody is wondering where all the fillies are this year - so far - we have had ALL fillies!
