I LOVE Trakehners!
|
Excuse me a moment while I brag about my 11 month old Stiletto colt out of my Putza mare.
This is another of those stories about our hot horses. First some background. Phalanx was a huge colt at birth. He had a very large umbilical cord which may not have properly sealed. At 2 days Phalanx developed diarrhea. He did not show any other signs of illness.. To be on the safe side, my vet did a plasma transfer. He left the catheter in to administer other meds as well as giving me meds to be administered orally. Phalanx was too big and strong for me to take down. Too many meds to give in a hurry while he stood. So I had to wait until Phalanx would lay down and then hold him down by his neck until he would quit struggling long enough to give him his meds. This happened several times a day for 5 days. He recovered, and I never had occasion to need to hold him down again -- until now.
I have been on foal watch and took a break for a cup of tea. When I returned, there was Phalanx, cast in the corner of his stall. He was laying quietly, flat out on his side. As I looked more closely, I nearly died. He had pushed loose the bottom board and gotten both front legs under the board and into the next stall. His legs were caught clear up at the top where they join the chest. His rear was against the back wall and his back legs were curled up against his belly. When he tried to get up he would hit his head and neck against the wall long before he could even roll up onto his chest. After deciding I couldn't do this alone, I called my sleeping husband down to the barn. While we waited for him to get there, Phalanx laid quietly. Everytime he started to try to get up, I laid my hand on his neck and he would lie back down quietly. I was amazed. After my husband got there, we tried unsuccessfully to get him out for a while. We were afraid to remove the board for fear his entire chest would slide down under the wall as the stall next to it is lower. Finally, Wayne was able to push his front legs back under the wall far enough that I could get a soft cotton rope around the tops of both legs and pull them straight back against his belly long enough for Wayne to come back around the wall and we could roll him over. All this time, each time he thought about getting up, I just laid my hand on his neck and he laid right back down. After we finally got him rolled over, he didn't even get up until Wayne made him get up. Then he just stood cool as a cucumber. Not a feather ruffled, not a scratch on him. This entire process lasted at least 45 min., maybe an hour or more. I was so proud of him. You couldn't have asked more of an adult horse, much less a yearling. These hot Trakehners! Don't you just love them? I knew you would understand.
Take care, Eileen

What a great story for Sunday morning start the day feeling good! What a good boy, extra treats and a body massage for him. He sounds like one of those really extra special Trakehners. Thanks for sharing. Koko

Ahh, nothing like a smart, trusting horse. Just goes to show how much these guys actaully remember. Congrats on having your situation work out OK. With a lesser horse, you could easily have had a huge vet bill on your hands.

You'd better give her some apples, too. That is terrific. sometimes I think we should put together some of these stories in printed form and just hand them to people when they say how hot Trakehners are. But with public demonstrations like yours, we won't have to. They can see it for themselves. Congrats on your win and your mare's winning behaviour!
Take Care, Eileen

I love my Trakehner!

My "hot" Arab filly cast herself when she was about 5 mos old. We were in the pasture with our back to her, when we heard an unconcerned nicker. Turning around we saw her on the ground, her back to us, with her legs caught in the gate. She was looking at us like, o.k. guys, come and rescue me. She is such a doll.
