I just read in the Equine Times that there is a new big facility going up at Ortonville, MI. It is supposed to have seating for 20,000, a huge indoor and huge indoor warmup, 4 Grand Prix arenas outside, stalls for 1000, etc. The are taking bookings for 2003 on.
Does anyone know if the ATA has completely decided against using commercial facilities and is setting out on a permanent plan of having meetings at members farms?
Well, I don't think they are "against" the idea. The problem is the cost to rent a facility of that size will likely kill the budget entirely. I think that is a big part of what happened at this last meeting in St. Louis. I don't believe it broke even after all the costs were added up. What would be great is if there were an "underwriter" or some way to rent such a lavish facility as sort of a "donation".

Oh, I agree. A place like that would be fantastically expensive to rent. The turnout at the last several years of ATA conventions would hardly merit 20,000 seating! The thing is, I can't imagine too many events other than Equitana-type things or Indio or something of that nature that would require all of that space. I wonder if they are going to rent out portions, so multiple things go on at one time.
What actually happened with Columbus, where they managed to hold the convention for years? Did the facility get too expensive all of a sudden, or were people too unhappy with the stabling etc.?
I think it is good for convention to move around the country but wonder how many members have places big enough to accomodate enough horses. It would be nice enough in moving around the country if it could stay out of the "fringe" states that are on the very edge. For example, not many people would want to haul horses up to Maine. I have a similar feeling about attending anything in Florida, while I am sure that Floridians (is that a word?) would rather not come up to the wilds of northern Michigan!
I guess it comes down to needing people to attend, and bring horses, so that some fun things can be done (like the mare show and so forth). But you can't do any fun things with no people and no horses. Sort of a vicious circle. It would be a shame for the convention to just fade into a board and member meeting.
