I love Trakehners!
|
I recently (October 2011) purchased this mare - said to be a Trakehner mare - 10 years old. She is completely black with a white star on her forehead. I have not ordered the DNA kit and she did not have papers with the purchase. She was at a sporthorse facilty in Conroe, TX where the owner purchased her from boarders having a hard time. The boarders said they purchased her from a broodmare band in New Mexico area. She was in their lesson program for a short while before the owner I purchased her from bought her where she sat for a year. I have spoken with the ATA regarding the DNA kits but was not sure what they will tell me. I have looked for farms that were out that way but to no avail. Any direction is greatly appreciated. Her name was "Bella" - but sure that is a barn name. We call her Scarlett Belle.

Can you tell if she has a brand? That can help with finding out if she's registered.
I'm currently at Holloman AFB in New Mexico...I know Bill Gammill (sp?) over in Las Cruces has bred Trakehners in the past...his number is 575-523-7020.
Good luck!

Insterruf was pasture breeding until he was 30 something in NM which makes her about the right age. Might want to check her against his DNA first. I talked to someone who seemed to remember a Bella on their farm. Plus she kind of looks like Insterruf.
If she is by him you are so lucky!! I have an aged gelding by him always wished he was a mare so I could breed him.

There was also Moonwink in NM. They went out of business 10 years or so ago. I found this in an old newsletter:
Moonwink, Inc., home of Topas II, is going out of business. We are selling all horses from weanlings to broodmares, all registered or eligible for registration. Prices from $1,000 to $15,000. Please call for additional info.
Pam Harris, 505-539-2788 (NM), moonwink@gilanet.com
Not sure how to get in touch with her but that is another option. At least that gives you 2 different stallions to test against.

Always was in New Mexico most of his years at stud. The owner was Nubbie Errickson and now lives in Oregon. The ATA would have her contact information. If you want the ATA to compare your mare's DNA to a few possible sires, they can do that. Cost of DNA testing on mare is $60. If DNA does confirm a sire, this does not necessarily guarantee registration papers. There is a legal process to determine ownership from last recorded owner to you, if the mare has been registered prior. If a new registration, then stallion owner has to be contacted and then process goes from there. Nubby might be able to help identify the mare if the sire should happen to be Always. Hope that helps.

Thanks so very much for the options to investigate. You guys are very very knowlegeable and I am so lucky to have found this group! I come from the SE Arabian world - grew up with Ruminaja Ali and love his line and still follow all of his get and siblings get but I fell in love with my girl and had to have her - she does have a very lovely Arabianesque neck and some of their fire I will have her tested and then go from there. I do have a bill of sale for her so I can prove my ownership and the last two owners as well. Unfortunately she does not have a brand - that would make this treasure hunt too easy

The ATA does have a mare named Bella registered. She was originally NATA and then became ATA when the two organizations unified. The Bella with ATA is a 1996 model, so older than what you think your mare is. Nubby Errickson was breeder and Always was the sire. The ATA should have a paper file on their Bella that will have pictures. You can call Claire at the ATA office and ask her to pull the file on Bella. If the pictures match, DNA would still be required to verify Always as the sire.

I have taken all of your suggestions and put in an email with photos and the DNA request kit back to Claire with the ATA. I will update you guys on the next lead down the rabbit hole.
My first show with her on Sunday was cancelled due to all of the blessed rain we are having here in Montgomery, TX...much needed relief for the ranchers, but too sloppy for trailers and dressage.
See you at the barn,

Sent off the dna kit yesterday with tail hairs - I was so surprised she did not even flinch when I pulled the hairs!
I am hoping that one of the stallions you guys mentioned is our match - I would sure love to find out who her parents are...I feel like I should be going on Maury Povich to talk about it

I would definitly include Topas II in your sire DNA typing. I had a Topas II grandson (Pennant-son) with almost that same facial structure, look & markings. Good Luck!

Well - all three stallions came up negative against her DNA...so I asked the ATA to see what else they could help me with...to make matters more complicated, when the vet looked at her during her annual exam, he said she might be as young as 8 per her teeth. Just had to add more hay to the hay stack for me to search through! Regarding her training, she is coming along fairly nice - I had a great lesson on her today!

ok - no matches in the database. It was suggested to do a blood test match? Does anyone know much about these and what exactly they tell?

The olds of a blood test match are very slim - especially since we have no data on her parentage. I am going stop on the search and focus on her dressage training skills at this point. I hope to have her in Training Level at the end of this summer and start schooling on Level 1.
