What are your thoughts on the foal market in today's sketchy market?  My mare is open, and she may remain that way until things calm down.  Would love to hear everyone's opinion.

Personal observation: here in California, there are four (non-trakehner) other colts in the pasture with mine; three other yearling colts in the adjacent pasture. All but mine are for sale and have been. All are unsold. Their prices range from $7500 to $9000, and all but one are very nice and good representatives of their respective breeds.

Besides foals, other horses are up for sale. The bulletin boards at both barns, feed stores, etc. are packed with fliers.

California has definitely been hit hard economically. Not all areas have experienced the same hit -- it was the hi-tech industry.

Also, do you want to sell your foal as a weanling, yearling or older? The economy might well pick up before the foal is even born....

AND, on a very positive note, I see some wonderful "deals", if you will, on stallion fees, so it might be a good time to breed from that perspective. Stallion owners understand the economic situation as well.  You could benefit from taking advantage of these generous offers.

Good luck!

The horse market in the midwest is, likewise, a buyer's market and there is very little buying going on.  Your best bet (I think) is to use the year to ride your mare and show her if you can to further her reputation and think again about breeding in a year if conditions for selling improve (unless you want a foal to raise as your personal riding horse - then go for it).

I am interested in leasing a few good mares to be bred to Potentate. Does anyone know of any prospects for me ?
