Experienced breeders I need your help! A friend wants a "custom foal" from my mare. How do you handle this? Do you use a contract? Any problems/pitfalls I should know about? Thanks for any insights

Always, always, always use a contract!!!! That way everyone knows what each party's responsibilities and obligations are! You would be leasing your mare, so the contract can be set up like any lease. It should:
- state who the parties are; - define the term of the lease (Does it begin when the leasee begins the breeding process, like with the first vet check for ovulation? Or does it begin on a certain date in the month that you want to breed the mare? Does it end when the foal is weaned? What if the mare does not get in foal or loses the foal? Does it end then? I think it's only fair that it does.); - define the leased property (mare name, reg. no., a it of pedigree info, color); - identify where the mare will be kept during the term of the lease (your place? their place?); - clearly state how the mare will be cared for (especially if she will be cared for by the leasee off your property), how you will care for the mare during the lease term including whether you will be there for all of the vet visits, foaling, foal handling; - state how much money you expect to receive each month for the lease and what is included in this fee (all stabling, farrier, insurance, routine vet expences, etc.) and when you expect to receive payment (first of the month with a 5 day grace period after which you will charge interest? After all, you have your bills to pay related to the mare); - state what additional expences the leasee is responsible for like all vet bills related to breeding, pregnancy (usually additional shots needed for mares in foal), foaling, and the resulting foal. Will the bills go directly to the leasee or will the leasee pay them each month with the lease fee; and - decide if you are going to charge a fee per month for the resulting foal's care, too, or if you will only charge for vet and farrier bills for the foal.
