I had forgotten how much I rely on my cameras until this past week. The electricity went out in my barn (took a while to get the electrician out to fix what turned out to be a very simple problem) and I have two mares that are "close" and warranted be on foal watch. I wasn't doing the all night watch but going out every few hours and checking on them... and getting NO sleep.
Last night, my cameras were up and running and I got a GREAT night's sleep. It makes a world of difference!
I am a light sleeper anyway and usually wake up during the night a few times - I just roll over in bed, watch the monitor a few mins then back to sleep, never leave my covers. There is also sound so if the mares make a weird noise I will hear it on the monitor/tv (I have them hooked up to a 13 inch) and that will wake me up to check. As we get closer I usually set my alarm to go off more often to make sure I check, and when the milk test and her "signs" are showing that we are imminent I actually stay awake more. With the mares under camera I have not missed a birth since 2006 (the only one I've missed was the one that went early in the field).
I do put the mares on mare stare too - which is an even BIGGER advantage as people from all over the world will help you watch your mare. I've had calls from CAN, the UK, and here in the US that "your mare is down"....
As an added "bonus" to the cams you get to see all the odd things your mares do at night when no one is watching LOL.
