Stallions Who Have Crossed Well With Arab Mares?
« on: May 20, 2010, 01:16:23 PM »

Not my mare in question, but I was talking to someone who knows someone with a very nice Arab mare (good temperament, show record, etc.) who is considering breeding and loves the look of my friend's Traks.  Said friend asked me if I knew of Trak stallions who have mixed especially well on Arab that she might recommend for further consideration.  The mare is supposed to be quite nice though smallish, of course.

Anybody know of great crossing Trak stallions?

I've seen SEVERAL Impressionist/Arab crossed offspring and they are all fantastic.  Joe has bred many (but since he started with Arabs before TKs he had and still has some QUALITY mares).  The Oskar/Arabs are nice too but personally I prefer the Imp/Arab crosses.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Donnerkeil and Arab gelding.  Took a long time to grow into himself and keep track of all his parts at the same time, but awesome horse now.  If I remember correctly, Pennant bred a lot of Arab mares a long time ago.  Not sure if he's even still available.  Pix of some of the younger stallions (can't remember who, at the moment) made me think that some of them would be great crosses on Arabs.

Pennant is deceased Sad and I don't think there was any frozen on him - at least they aren't advertising any.

While Happy has not been crossed with a lot of Arab mares, he has crossed very well with an Egyptian and Polish mares -- very typey, good bone/conformation, movement and temperament.  There are some pics on Happy's website of the crosses.

Most Trakehner stallions will cross very well with arabian mares, I would look for a stallion that you and your friend like and go for it. She/he will be very happy with the outcome. The one thing that I would causion would be if you are looking for a foal that is going to finish over 16.0 hands then look for a stallion that has produce size with arabians.

I have not owned an Arab mare but had a ringside seat to a friend's Arabian breeding program. I also have a friend who was an Arabian breeder decades ago and now breeds KWPN horses. She is a USDF breed show judge and has judged at the Arabian shows as well as the USDF circuit.

I would recommend that the owner of an Arabian mare present her in hand for feedback on conformation.

You want to avoid using a mare whose neck is tied in deep in the chest. I saw my friend produce a foal out of one of her beloved mares by an approved Trak stallion and the foal had a horrific ewe neck, coming from the mother's deep neck. Shocked

Small narrow feet can also be a problem.

Scratch a Trakehner's pedigree and you find Shagya and Arabians in the back so the Trakehner stallion is a good choice, probably a better choice, for breeding an Arabian mare.

If the arab mare is not too light frames it is one of the best crosses. I use to breed crabbet arab horses those are a little bigger in the bone/frame and are just a beautiful cross with the trakehner.

I have a 5yo half Arab gelding by Leonidas who is very nice.  His Arab dam is small, maybe 14.1, but my gelding is pushing 15.3 and, I think still growing a bit.

I don't know that any particular stallion would be "best" for Arab mares, as I think they all would cross well.
