Video of Preston!
« on: March 08, 2010, 08:22:59 PM »

Taken 2 weekends ago with Katie Wooten in the irons... It was Preston's first time jumping since July '09 and her first time riding him.  He is thinking "it's about time I get to do something fun mom!!"  Roll Eyes LOL

Preston looks all grown up. He looks very balanced over  fences with good rhythm. It's nice to see him not rush the jumps or pull his rider out of their seat. His trainer is doing a good job with him.

He should do very well in any discipline. He's a handsome young man Wink

What a nice *large* course for a youngster! Good to see him not being silly with all that space. He looks very keen and willing - it looked like a good first impression ride? Did his rider like him? What is his career path looking like this year?

Did you breed him Anissa?

Thanks Bonnie and JRR.

Bonnie - The girl riding him isn't his trainer.  That was actually her first ride on him ever.  I started him at 3, at 4 he went to a friend of mine in Southern Pines who events.  She had him for a year and did wonders with him.  I credit her for how well he does under saddle.  (Michelle Palladino)

Katie was riding him to put him over some fences so I could do a video of it (I don't really jump anymore).  There has been interest in him as a hunter or event horse and of course everyone wants to see how he is over fences....

JRR - yes, I'm his breeder.  He is actually the first horse that I bred.  His dam is Emma's dam (Encore) who I showed hunter/jumpes with.  His sire is Impressionist.  I presented him, he was turned down at age 3, I bred him to 3 mares then gelded him.  He is 7 in May this year.  As for what we are doing with him this year... I will show him dressage until he sells, Katie may pop him around an event course for me... we'll see.

Watching the video makes me want to go out for a ride. Still have snow here. He looks fun and sweet. What age do you find the Traks "come into their own"?

Thanks!  Grin  He is fun and sweet to ride - but his mom was too! LOL  Actually under saddle he has always been a blast - even as a stallion he was a great ride.

As for when they come into their own.... I think it depends on the horse.  I know that is kind of cliche to say, but I can't pin point an age.  Preston for example has always been self confident and easy to ride.  Never spooky etc.  His half sister (Emma) while she isn't "spooky" is MUCH more aware of her surroundings and reactive (stero typical red headed mare with a lot of blood).  The half brother (full brother to Emma), Nick, issimilar to Preston in that he isn't overly reactive/spooky but he has stronger opiniinons (similar to his sister).  My 2 year old Venezianno has been "grown up" since she was 2 months old when she lost her dam  - and she even is the leader of whatever herd I put her in and keeps the youngsters in line (def and "old soul" LOL)....

In terms of riding and their bones/joints/muscles etc I personally don't like to push them.  I don't back any of my youngsters before they are 3 yo and I don't push them the first year.

I also don't start my youngster's under saddle until they are  at least 3. I personally don't think any young horse, regardless of its breed is mentally or physically ready until then.

My filly by Tim will be 3 in April.  She will go to the baby trainer shortly after she turns 3, be started, come home in 2-3 months and hang out in pasture. Then she'll most likely go to my event trainer, Yves Sauvignon when she is closer to 4 where she'll be exposed to all 3 disciplines...

Thanks for the answers.
My mare was super easy at 3 and I rode her in a halter-by roads, trail riding etc. But she really became "herself" at about 6, if that makes sense. She started to use her own judgment instead of just doing what she was told. More like a partner.
Preston made me think of the partner part.

Ah, I've got you now!   Smiley  I still think that it depends on the individual - Preston has always been this way under saddle.  That may be because I did so much with him as a youngster in hand.  The boy had more miles on him by the time he was 3 (in terms of shipping around the country) than his mom did her entire show career LOL.  He loves to work and he loves to please, and he LOVES to show off.

I will say that I don't think any of my others are as "easy" as he is/was.  So for him - he came into his own very early, I'm still waiting for that moment with the others... Tate is almost there I think (at 4).
