Unlike little brother Harry (who seems to have been born understanding xc), Manny had a few scares last year so Sara backed him off and spent the last 5mo's schooling him on xc courses (and indoors the last 3 - they're in Idaho after all) to re-build his confidence and familiarize him with all types of xc questions.
Their first outing was last weekend @ Twin Rivers in Sunny California. Oops; spoke too soon!
While technically not a monsoon, it was the next best thing. On Saturday, organizers canceled XC as they couldn't get a 2nd ambulance on course due extremely poor conditions. So while he didn't get to run XC, he learned what it means to compete in what eventers like to call "slightly wet" conditions. While he hated the rain in his face & ears, like a true TK, he sucked it up and gave her solid performances in dressage and stadium - both during driving rainstorms. The rain made him jog a couple of times during his free walk, which cost him points, and he carried a 36.1 for 8th place after dressage. However, while he may not fully understand XC, Manny was born knowing how to bring it in stadium and he did it again @ Twin Rivers, going double clear and moving up to 7th.
Now that you've seen photos of how hard it really was raining, here's video of their dressage where you can hear it, but don't really see how hard the rain's coming down. BTW Manny was gelded when he was 3 (he turns 6 March 27th) but still looks like a stallion (Sara says she gets that question all the time).
