TONS of snow in Germany kept about 1/4 of the stallions home. Disappointed not to see Münchhausen as I was quite looking forward to him (always amusing how BIG Hennie *M*'s father is). Of approx. 21 stallions presented, only 4 approved: 2 full TB's, a Shagya and a Hohenstein son.
Just home last night & lots of work to catch up, so my impressions later but wanted everyone here to know how well Taz represented the American Trakehners:
He was one of two individually showcased jumpers (the other was Bel Espace Go - also a confirmed "S-level" jumper) and entered the arena to "Born in the USA".
The Germans were quite surprised at the method of jumping as Helmut showed the maneuverability and speed required to win @ S-Level (Imke Eppers later told me she was "so scared when he turned right back to the S-oxer, then amazed as he easily cleared it and went to the next jump, no problem"). All the others took long, looping turns and significant runs at the jumps - which costs valuable time in jump offs for $$. The knowledgeable audience quickly realized what they were seeing and enthusiastically applauded.
After a clean, fast jumping round Helmut stopped, dismounted, tossed Kruemel (Taz's regular rider 5'1", 95lb regular rider @ Majenfelderhof) up in the saddle and went for an interview by the emcee. Meanwhile, Kruemel cantered by me (standing in the middle of the arena, holding a U.S. flag) grabbed it and RACED around the arena at a full eventing GALLOPP with the American flag waving!
More later. Photos graciously supplied by Jutta Bauerschmidt attached.

Here's video. Someone alerted me to this on youtube & just saw it myself. Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIw9W_tdvz0
BTW, I misspelled Jutta's last name; it's Bauernschmitt.

Thanks Shawnda (and Connie!); I was very proud of him and after he gave a super accounting of both himself and the ATA's breeding.
So impressions:
JUMPING BLOOD IS IN The Editor's intro in the Feb '09 issue of Der Trakehner is titled "Paradigm Shift". Frau Eppers (who's dressage horse is by K2) commented how this seems to be the trend in all breeds - and pointed to the success of Moorland's Totilas (who's dam line is replete w/jumping blood).
The same issue had a promotional piece for the Feb 12th - 13th Hengstschau that included the schedule information, then focused on 5 stallions (all names appeared in BOLD):
1. KENTUCKY - 2009 Siegerhengst 2. Klosterhof Medingen (home of E.H. Caprimond and E.H. Hohenstein, BTW) "next generation jumpers" ABENDTANZ and COME CLOSE 3. DER DUERER TSF, and 4. TZIGANE *Pb*
Considering E.H. Hohenstein was appearing (as were Herzensdieb and Hibiskus), it was unmistakeable where the Verband's focus is currently.
HOW IMPORTANT BLOOD NO LONGER AVAIL. IN EU IS TO THE GERMAN BREEDERS: Steffi made a super-nice plaque for Taz's stall. In addition to photos of him and his offspring, it had a large pedigree table. I probably counted 20 people who physically stopped, put their fingers on the chart and commented, "RONDO . . . the best!", then the finger moved downward and stopped again, pointing out, "CONDUS. . . the best!".
RARE BLOOD, PART II: THE IMPORTANCE OF MARES After looking over the pedigree, the horse and photos of his offspring, the next thing the German breeders wanted to see was die Mutter (palatable disappointment I had no photos of Tekoa). Breeder after breeder knew - and liked - Tarim, Templeritter and of course Herr Langels' recently deceased Elite mare, Thirza.
YOU'RE NEVER TOO SUCCESSFUL TO STUDY Maybe the most shocking thing all weekend was when the jumpers were all warming up (Bel Espace Go, Der Duerer, Hirtentanz, Papallito (TB), Prince Patmos and Taz were all in the warmup area @ the same time) and I noticed a gentleman in the corner watching Taz like a hawk and taking notes. I asked Steffi if she knew who that was and she laughed out loud, surprised I hadn't recognized Burkhard Wahler (owner of Klosterhof Medingen). After I read the story about Klosterhof's "next generation jumpers" I realized how this tied back into points #1 above.

He looks fantastic, Kim. He is such an elegant stallion, and what an emissary for American bred Trakehners! When you say "he turned right back to the S-oxer", can you tell us at what time in the video that occurs. Call me blind, but I'm trying to figure out what was unusual about his method of jumping that you refer to.
Thanks Joy. I honestly had to think about that myself when Imke said it. I think she's talking about him cantering around the back side of the double to the free-standing oxer (approx. 1:15 in the video). All the others cantered the entire length of the long side, hugged the rail on the short side (where everyone was standing), then came back down to the free-standing oxer. As Helmut called it, "they went to Paris, then came back to Schleiswig Holstein". It basically allows momentum to assist w/the jump vs. the horse using his hind end power alone.

Here's a video of Prince Patmos, but honestly, this is a BABY who should be ridden with long approaches: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAxBi8fQO5k
Trying to find a video of one of the older jumpers - who all used the same approach - and longer when they went to the S-oxer (again, this longer approach allows momentum to assist the jump).

Fantastic job from Helmut and Taz. Kudos to you for ongoing support of your boy. Know it hasn't always been easy.
Know you are rightly proud of him. All of us are also proud of all of you.
Congratulations. Job well done.
