I take it this is for Frozen? I do P and E just about every year on at least one mare if not more. Have had very good success with it so far.
Kathy St Martin is a God send and very good about answering questions (Equine Repro on COTH) if you shoot her a PM.
BUT, for frozen, I have seen that you use one dose pre ovulation then another post. If you only have one dose you need to do it post ovulation. I've only done P and E for frozen once and that was for Chloe who had to be euthanized 5 days after she was inseminated so I don't know what the results were... We only did one dose (Veneziano semen so didn't have a lot) and it was within one hour post ovulation.
Double checked in my notes from the repro class... and it is a dose prior and a dose post. You need to do the first dose no more than 12 hours pre ovulation and the other one no more than 6 hours post ovulation.
You should also still do the ultrasounds as the "time" isn't always the same for every mare. For instance my mare that I did the frozen on, we checked her at around 5 pm and she had not ovulated, we checked around 2 am and she was getting there, we checked again around 6:30 am and she had just ovulated (like it burst in his hand almost)... if I had bred at the time I was "supposed" to have with my one dose the day before the semen might not have lasted and she might not have gotten preg... of course in my case I'm not sure if she caught or not but I suspect she did. The P and E is just a guideline and helps minimize the amount of ultrasounds, it isn't a "bible" to the times. With fresh there is less stress involved for it.
