Arrived in TN
« on: January 25, 2010, 03:08:03 PM »

Well, the horses finally arrived from CA yesterday.  Thankfully, all in one piece.  I had scheduled a full charter load to bring 12 horses from CA to TN and we were finally ready so I called the shipper and said, let's set a date.  Unfortunately, that date was last Thursday and the horses loaded in the pouring rain.  We had two pick up sites 8 hours apart to pick up my 8 Trakehners and the 4 Kentucky Mountain Horses that joined them.  The trucker used his GPS to set the route between and did not review his notes to stay on US 10, so he ended up in Temecula trying to go to the desert with flooded and closed roads between him and the second pick up (and my 8 traks on board!)  I was furious!!!  But they finally made it, re-routed through El Paso to avoid the weather and laid over in Dallas instead of Oklahoma.  My explicit instructions were "I don't care what it takes or how long it takes but these horses had better arrive at my farm "SCRATCHLESS (meaning without a scratch on them).  Boy, was I releaved when all were finally safely in their paddocks, stalls or fields and reaclimating to life as a real horse.... with the exception of the two stallions who just have to wait their turn out in the fields!

Anyone in the area is welcome to come and visit.  Still getting everything situated, but we are expecting one more trak who has been living on the east coast to join the herd soon, and then we will have 3 foals this spring.

And I am finally sleeping at night...... (until foals are due at least) Cheesy

So glad to hear they are all safe and sound. Isn't the weather in California incredible! My daughter is on her way to the winter circuit in Thermal and her drive has been anything but pleasant. You will have to post pictures of your new place! What foals are you expecting?

I know you are relieved and happy to have your herd home with you Beckie!  There is nothing worse than shipping your horse(s) and not having control over them!!!!

I concur that you'll need to post some photos of the new place with your babies home!  Smiley

Hi Beckie

Glad to hear the horses arrived safely.
Sometimes shipping can be as stressful for the owner and the horses.

Undecided

Thanks for asking.  All is going fine with the horses settling in well.  The two stallions (my 3 yo trak stallion prospect by Summertime and the Kentucky Mountain Horse stallion that we now have) are getting along great.  They even manage to behave when they share a fenceline in adjoining pastures.  A little screaming is about all.  This may change as the season goes on, but so far I could not ask for better behaved boys.  Since this is my first real experience with stallions (other than bringing up junior), I am thrilled with the behavior so far.  Now the mares are a little different story!  Actually, nothing bad just the usual pecking order stuff, but it does wear on the nerves when they constantly bicker (over who gets the biggest pile of hay and how close the horse in the next stall is to that hay, of course).

I am actually just dealing with the fact that my barn is VERY disorganized still and barn work takes twice as long as it should.  Very inefficient and driving me crazy, but getting better every day as I get more organized.  And the horses are in a lot more than I had hoped with the constant rain and sleet.  But they all seem to get that it sucks outside and are doing fine.  Feeding up a few of the teenagers who lost weight on the trip.  Expecting three foals it the end of April.

Hope all is well with the rest of the country.  Let me know if anyone heads this way for a road trip.   Smiley

Beckie,
Glad they all made it safely!  And welcome to my world!!!  LOL.

Active duty Air Force....move every few years....and I have found that as long as they are all traveling together, I could go back and forth across the country multiple times and every morning, as long as all of them are getting on the trailer, everyone hops right on!  Everyone drinks & eats fine because they know their buddies are right next to them.  But I only have six.... Grin

And once I make it back east coast way, I'd love to stop in!

Claudia,  We would love to get to know you.  I wanted to attend your inspection but we had out of state guests that weekend.  Let me know when/if you are in our area and I will do the same with you.  We are near Lexington and Jackson.
