Cute photo He was in his scruffy shedding stage, eh? But Mom still thought he was pretty neat.

What color did he end up? He looks like he was turning darker.

Weirdly, I was just having a conversation a few days ago with my trainer about color and specifically this colt. She'd seen him recently. Said he is doing very well under saddle, a tall and elegant guy, and reminds her more and more of Mozart, whom she showed herself. She thinks he has a great future as a dressage horse.
Monty turned out black. Absolutely black now, she said, not even looking dark bay. Here's a picture from last year which is the most up-to-date I have from him, although Cindy said she'd try to get me a more recent one next time she has a chance.

I had the hardest time with this colt deciding what color and what markings he had. Every time you looked at him, it changed. I went through socks/no socks at least 20 times in the early weeks. He was bay, then he was "mouse," then he was God only knows. He went through nearly as many changes as my latest colt, who was born deep bay and is now solid silver.
Color was just one minor way in which Monty drove me nuts, but I was glad to have him around to find minor ways to drive me nuts. I will never as long as I live forget the morning he was born. I still swear this horse took 10 years off my life. I told him after the dust settled that morning that he OWED me an Olympic medal as breeder someday.
But a few years later, the dream is still alive and while still a dream, not an impossible one. Breeding is such a roller coaster ride at times, from a horrible birth morning to Mozart Jr. in several varying colors along the way.
