My trip to Vermont last week was timed perfectly The fall foliage was at its peak and absolutely gorgeous! The horses in the field are Tylord's mares. It was a misty, cool morning...

I love the colors in New England, but oh! knowing that winter is just around the corner makes me wonder why I'm here (in Maine). Spring is lovely, Summer is elegant, Fall is spectacular, and Winter is the absolute pits. And it lasts for at least 5 months. Any horses at Tylord's learn how to be tough.

Winter doesn't settle in my corner of Vermont until just before Christmas. It's the elevation of only 310 feet above sea level and Lake Champlain that keeps us warmer. The two towns of Benson and West Haven are referred to in Vermont as the "Banana Belt". In 34 years of living here it has always been touch and go as to whether we will have a "White Christmas". Then Spring arrives by the end of March and by mid April we have to get the lawn mower out. Personally the three seasons that I appreciate the most are Spring, Fall and Winter. I hate being hot! Only so many clothes you can take off but there's no limit as to how many you can put on! I measure how cold a winter we have had by how often the water buckets freeze. I don't mean just an icing over, I mean when the ice goes from the top to the bottom of the bucket. Last winter we only had that happen four times. About ten years ago we had a winter that it happened for a whole month! Adds a lot of time to the chores. It does make for hardy tough horses. Now that we are able to extend the lives of our equines, I have found that my older horses flourish in the cold months and suffer more in the heat and insects of the warm months. They drop more weight and drag themselves around. Now that Fall is well under way both Esna and Akita at 29 are starting to trot in and out of the barn and both are starting to put weight on again. Yea! I want them to both see their 30th birthdays.

Wow, nice picture! Those colors and rolling hills are beautiful, really must visit! I'm in Alberta and do not wish to discuss the topic of winter as it is a very disturbing subject. IT has come early this year, the pail has already been frozen for several days and there is snow on the ground. My little Boo (just turned 3 months) is actually grumpy at me because of the weather, I think he has lost all respect for me that I would ask a horse to live in such a place! LOL
