"Can't you wait to take a picture til Mom finishes washing my butt?"  He's a cute little guy who will likely be a great jumper like Dad.  Congratulations.

It's with a heavy heart I send you more pictures. I lost Mädchen to colic today. She went in for surgery but couldn't be saved. I'll be bringing home my orphan foal, Domingo, in a couple of days. They are going to try to teach him to drink from a bucket while I look for a nurse mare or another solution.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of such a good mare.  Your colt looks like a sturdy little guy, but it's got to be stressful on him to lose his Mom at such a tender age.  I pray you can find a nurse mare for him.

Oh Carol - I just got home and saw this.  I am so so horribly sorry.  Was the colic from displacing her colon?  It is so tragic and scary.  Jingles from FL for your beautiful colt.  I'll send you the link of the milk replacer that my filly liked the best last year (she turned up her nose at the other brands but wolfed this one down).  It is in a black/red bag that has goats, cows and horses on it.. can't remember the name though.  I'll look in a little bit.  Wish I was closer to help you out.

Thank you all for your kind words. Mädchen was by far my best mare and the pride of the barn both as a broodmare and as a show horse and will be greatly missed. I do have two daughters from her and of course the new baby boy. Domingo from the moment he was born did everything on his own not needing any help from me with standing or nursing. The vet clinic tells me that by the next morning he was drinking from a bucket. They just love him. I'll be bringing him home tomorrow. I'm going to try to put him with my old broodmare Froehliebchen who just adores babies and has always been a great mother to her kids. I'm also waiting for another mare, Dynamit to foal. Her due date is June 8 but I think she'll go sooner than that so there may be some possibilities there for companionship.

Oh, Carol, I just saw this.  I can't tell you how sorry i am about Mädchen.  What an awful loss!

Froe is a wonderful mare, but you might want to consider a nurse mare.  www.cyberfoal.com (this one's a registry), and http://www.ctba.com/nursemarenbank.htm.

If Dynamit foals soon, you may want to try rubbing the placenta or other birth materials on Domingo, and she may very well accept him to nurse as well.

Domingo is beautiful, btw, and looks very sturdy and solid.

Domingo is doing very very well. He doesn't know that being weaned at 4 days old isn't normal. He's very independent and thriving on the Foal-Lac milk replacer. He's eating hay and grass and starting to eat grain. He likes to take me for walking tours around the farm. I've assigned Whimsical, my Martini mare, as his buddy. They are across a half wall in the barn and turned out in adjoining paddocks. She likes to hang with him but I don't think would adopt him. I discovered that he has an emotional attachment to a horse blanket that I had hanging on his pasture fence. He likes to smell it and lay down and sleep next to it. I tried to move it the other day, big mistake, so I put it back. I guess he's going to be like Linus in the peanuts! Oh well!

Bless his heart - glad to hear he is doing well Carol.  Was the blanket his mom's?  or did she ever have it on so maybe her smell is on it??

Anissa,

No, the blanket wasn't his mother's but it obviously has a comforting horsey smell to it. The colic that his Mom had was from a rent or opening in the Mesentery which allowed the small intestine to slip through and become strangulated. About 40 feet would have had to be removed which would have left only about 29 feet that was viable. The vet said he had never seen a horse live with less than 40 feet. They gave her a 5% chance to survive and said she would be in a lot of discomfort. It was a very hard decision for me to make. I would have done anything to save her but it wasn't meant to be. I asked the vet if it were his horse what would he do. He said put her down. Apparently this is something that they see in broodmares as a complication from caring the foal. I'm coming to terms with it. I know that we did everything that we could. Also that Domingo is so unaware that this isn't normal helps a lot. Here's a picture of us taking one of our evening walks around the farm. You can see what a happy little baby he is.

OMG, I LOFF him.   Kiss Kiss Kiss

What a big boy (both maturity & size-wise) he is.  After a rough start, he seems to be quite happy with his doting human mommy.  Texas-sized {{Hugs}} to the little man.

Ugggg... I hate colic, and I esp hate those type of colics where you just can't do anything - I feel so helpless.  He looks like he is just a trooper about it - you're prob right that he just doesn't realise that this is not the way it is supposed to be.

Big hugs to you and Domingo both.
