more inspection ? - cost
« on: April 06, 2009, 04:22:30 PM »

Ok, the ATA is having an inspection as close as they have in the 9 years I've lived here (ironically someone started having them near where I used to live after I left there  Sad )
I have nominated my coming 5 yo but money is an issue for me and I have some related ?'s.

I know the inspection fee is $200.  I would also need to join at $75.  It looks like mare inspections start at 1:00.  I'm about 3 1/2 hours from there.  How early would I need to be there?  For those who have done this, would I really need to get a stall for the night before and the night after?  Do you know what the stall costs would be?  No way I can keep up with her trot.  I assume I can hire someone to do that?  How much do they usually charge?  I'm a lousy braider.  How much does that usually run and would someone be available?  Any other costs I'm not thinking about?

I actually don't show and don't plan to breed but, I would love to have her inspected just in case I end up having to sell at some point or, on the hand if I happen to come into some money and want to breed.  I'm just trying to decide if it's worth the cost or if I should think about approvals with a registry that has inspections in Lexington or if, financially, it's just not worth worrying about.  Thoughts appreciated!

Hi Deb.  Definitely would get there the night before.  I think my stall was $20, but of course that was a couple of years ago and I am sure it varies depending on the site.

You should be able to contact the site host and they can tell you if there is a handler and/or braider at the inspection.  They can usually supply you with their contact info.  My braider charged me $35, and depending on the handler you are probably looking at least $50 bucks.

I know the fees add up, but it is worth it.  It is a big day and you will have show nerves.  If you get there the night before you have plenty of time in the morning to settle your mare (and yourself) Smiley  When is the inspection?  Best of luck!!!

Stalls will depend on the site.  And it will vary a good bit from place to place - one thing to keep in mind is if shavings are included with the stall or are they seperate?  In Jax I had to charge $35 a stall (and that included 2 bags of shavings) and was for 2 nights - anything additional was $15 a night.  The advantage of getting their the night before is two fold - 1) it gives your mare time to settle in.  For some horses this is not an issue and for some (esp those that have not been off the property or not much) this is a major issue.  You can take her in the ring and let her see everything (and get all the "goblins and horse eating monsters" out of the ring LOL).  It will also make sure that she is well rested and hydrated for the inspection.  All of this translates into a looser, calmer mare that moves better and looks better (dehydrated horses - even slightly dehydrated - look "drawn up").  The 2) reason is more for YOU.  The inspections are a great way to socialize and meet fellow breeders etc.  The downside to just coming the day of is you are so stressed and worried you don't generally have time to do a lot of socializing (for some this is not an issue though LOL).

Also, keep in mind if you get there the night before it will give the braider time to get your mare's mane done and may even allow the handler time to work with her and get to know her more - which will also give you a better performance.

Braiders - Will vary from place to place.  I have braided at inspections and I've done it for free and charged up to $40 or so depends on what is going on.  Most "pro" braiders will charge between $35 to $45 (some are more, but really you should be able to get it for that).

Handlers will charge (normally) $50 - $60 for an inspection and trust me, a good handler is worth their weight in gold - and a bad one can be horrendous.  I have seen owners handle their horses adequatly (and they pass) - if they had had a "pro" they might have had a higher score, but the mare is still approved.  Heck, I am HORRIBLE at running with the horses but I handeled Dove at the inspection in Jax and she scored a 49.  With a pro she might have gotten higher marks, but in the end all that mattered was she was approved.   Wink

Inspections are like shows, you can make them as expensive or as cheap as you want/need them to be, but do remember sometimes the cost is more than just the $$.  And you know your mare better than anyone else - I do have one horse that is better if I take them the day of the show, but Tate for example needs 2 nights to really settle in before he really shows his stuff... every horse is different.

Personally (and if you can swing the cost of the stalls) I would bring her and let her stay.  From being at other conventions there is normally so much going on you are going to miss out and be bummed if you don't plan on staying overnight with her.  Otherwise you will get there, have to do your thing with her and then leave - you will miss the other mares, you will miss on some of the other stuff etc... it just makes it more "fun" to have her there.

I'd say that I"d braid for you but I'll have several of my own - if I can swing it  and my fingers hold out I'll help you, but no promises.
