I have a question for you all!  Do any of you breed to the Arab or TB stallions that are approved?  Would you ever consider it?  I happen to have seen both Quebec and Aul Magic and they were both outstanding!  I saw Magic at the inspection in CA and he is unbelievable (and I don't even particularly like Arabians (sorry!)!!!  He moves better than many Trakehner stallions that I've seen and I think I'm going to breed one of mares to him this year.  What do you guys think of the Arab and TB stallions?  It seems like very few Trakehner breeds utilize them.

And I have a question to tack onto yours. Somewhere once I read that thoroughbred/arab blood should be included every =number= of generations. I don't remember the number. And is it true? How does a breeder know when "it's time" to add that fire and refinement, or is that even what we're looking for?

sign me: I have no clue....

The formula I was presented with at first was 25% TB blood and 12% Arab blood were the desired proportions for the ideal Trakehner.

The problem with the formula is you have to have a lot of less than ideal (formulaicly) horses before you can make one.  12% Arab means 1 Arab 3 generations back, and Arab-Trakehners have friends and foes.

If I had the right mare for an approved TB or Arab stallion I might do it.  That cross would be far preferable than having the Arab or TB on the bottom (mare's) side of the pedigree.

I'll have to disagree with the  hotblood on the bottom since Arcticonius xx has founded a dynasty on her own!   In any case, I am hoping we get an approved Shagya Arabian to use as this is blood that no one can argue has positive effect.  I am in favor of Arabian blood and of course we are fortunate that we have an entire Arab show circuit in North America for the 1st generation crosses that aren't the desired end result.  This is good since I myself wound up with a gelding instead of the desired filly to breed back to another Trakehner stallion! Smiley

Ideally breeders are looking for Arabian blood (frequently this is Shagya blood) in the fourth generation and generally speaking Thoroughbred  in proportion to taste.    If the horses are getting too heavy or lacking in  athleticism and constitution, generally it's time to add more hot blood. It's a matter of taste really. Some like a lot of Thoroughbred up close, some prefer less.

I think the Tb and Arab stallions accepted for the ATA are nice and would be useful only it seems breeders generally tend to reserve their Trakehner mares for Trakehner stallions and use hotblood mares to add blood.

I'm more concerned that breeders select and evaluate the best possible mares so that the overall standard of the Trakehner breed is improved.

I'm not breeding anything- I own an Arabian mare. I would love to see another foal from her but I don't have the facilities to do it. Maybe some day.

Arcticonius xx is a notable exception to the rule about putting the blood on top.  However, she is not a surprising exception; in size and conformation she was quite Trakehner-like in appearance.  And I am not saying there are not a few Arab & TB mares here and there that produce outstanding warmblood cross foals.

The problem with taking TB & Arab mares to warmblood stallions is a less consistent phenotype, particularly in the second generation.  Foals frequently take after the mother in phenotype with additions from the sire.  When those foals in turn are bred, there is less consistency in what comes through--might look like a purebred Arab or TB, or like a purebred warmblood.
