Hi Friends,
Baby Bo (Bonus) came up lame last night. Had the farrier out this Am, thinking abscess - nope. So, we loaded him and Hofdame up and went to the hospital. X-rayed from toe to stifle and found nothing substantial, bloodwork good. He is very lame and we are thinking soft tissue injury of some sort. So, the will stay there until he is fine.
They were both just angels about the entire process - what minds these two have. Hofdame was a perfect lady, unless she could not see me - mommy's girl.
I would appreciate any prayers or jingles that you can spare and will keep you updated as I know more.
Thanks so much,
Stacey

Prayers from Illinois, Stacey. If horses from foal on up can find a way to injure themselves, they will. Keep us posted that it's nothing serious.

Hi Friends,
First, thank you all for the prayers, much appreciated.
He was worse this morning - more lame and some swelling. So, we laid him on the table and did a joint profusion (injected antibiotics into the entire leg). Then, he took fluid from the pastern and it was bloody/yellow - bad. We flushed the joint and injected more antibiotics. Looks like we have a septic pastern joint at this time. Good news is that we caught it very early, bad news is that the patern is the hardest joint to treat.
For some reason I feel like everything will be okay (even though this is one of the worst diagnosises a foal can have). God did not get him here against all odds to take him now...those are my hopes and prayers anyways.
I would sincerely appreciate your continued prayers for Baby Bo and his mommy.
Thank you all again,
Stacey

You are right Stacey - there is no way that Bo would be here if there wasn't some plan for him! Continued jingels coming your way. Thank goodness you caught it early!!!

UPDATE FOR MONDAY:
Well, we have found a bone chip on the lower pastern bone. This is most likely the cause of the infection and he must have had a trauma at some point. Luckily, it is very small - that is how we missed it on 4 other sets of x-rays (he is being scanned twice a day). So, we are watching him, waiting for the results from the fluid, started him on Surpass, keeping the antibiotics coming...That is what I know for now. He and Lady are in good spirits.
Thanks again!
Stacey

Prayers continuing here in Illinois. Can the vet make a tiny incision and remove the chip? Good to hear he and Mom are in good spirits.

UPDATE FOR WEDNESDAY:
Hi friends, THANK YOU ALL AGAIN FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!! The pathology on the joint fluid said yes to joint infection. So, we laid him down today again and did another profusion and flush. Right now, the major concern is to clear up the infection that was caused by the spur/chip. My vet has sent his x-rays to A&M to get advice on the chip once we have cleared up the infection - so we wait on that part. You cannot remove it with arthroscopy - the pastern is the ONE joint that you can't do that on (requires actual surgery)- lucky me. It MAy resolve itself, but we will be prepared in case it does not.
Bo and Lady are both in great spirits and going through the motions very well.
I will keep you all updated and sincerely appreciate the support and prayers - keep them coming please.
Thank oyu,
Bo, Lady and Stacey

Sorry I have not updated in a while, I have been tired.
They are still at the hospital and doing okay. We have the infection cleared up and hope that it stays clear. It was definately trauma of some sorts - 6 vets concurred this. So, now we are waiting through the weekend to make sure he does not get worse and I will bring them home for 30 more days of large stall rest. The x-rays have shown calsification around the trauma area in his pastern - we hope that it will STOP doing that and just heal on its own. He is not lame at the walk right now, which is good. We will not trot him out until Monday and see how he looks and go from there.
I still feel like he will just be fine - hoping for a bit of a miracle I suppose.
Thanks again for the thoughts and prayers! If anyone has delt with sort of thing, I would love to hear what you did and hwo it turned out.

Thanks for the update Stacey. I have been wondering how it was going with him, and keeping my fingers (and toes) crossed for you. I really hope he makes a full recovery, and I wish you the best of luck !

Thanks for the update Baby Bo Stacey - what a little fighter. Good boy. Good news that the infection's finally cleared. Continued prayers & adding mine to your wishes for a miracle . . . they do happen, and Baby Bo's certainly earned one.

Hi All,
Thanks for asking, pretty much the same situation right now. I left them at the clinic due to Ike coming to Texas (not much rain in San Antonio thankfully). We will x-ray again tomorrow and if no major changes they will come home for more rest. I can't wait to have them home again! He is still sound at the walk and off at the trot, so we watch the trauma inside and see how it goes. I plan to kind of "ignore" it for a while and hope it goes away since that is all we can do at this point, and still praying for a miracle complete recovery.
I have to say again that the temperament of these two horses is OUTSTANDING! You would think after a month of stall rest and constant poking, that he would be kind of mad about it. Nope - he is in my pocket and sweet as ever - just like his mom. I was telling Maren that the vet techs fight over getting to handle and play with him and Hofdame - they all love them!
I will let ya'll know when they are safe and sound at home and I will take some pictures too. He is shedding out his baby brown (sun bleached) coat and is now black again.
Thanks again!
