Hello again!
I finally got the dna testing done to see what else I can find under all that gray!
I had UC Davis test for Red Factor, Agouti and Gray. Of course he's heterozygous for all three just to make things difficult! I don't think this really helps narrow anything down about his parents.
Red Factor (E/e) - This means he is either black, bay or brown, not chestnut.
Agouti (A/a) - This means he is bay or brown (not all black).
Gray (N/G) - He's gray (yup!)
So what do we know about his parents? 1) One parent has to be gray 2) The other parent is gray, black, bay, brown or chestnut
What do I know about my horse? 1) He's gray (born bay or brown) 2) No white markings on his legs (and all 4 hooves black) 3) I'm pretty sure he has no facial markings (definitely no blaze or snip, but could possibly a faint or small star) 4) He is a gelding (possibly gelded late) 5) He was born between 1988-1998 (most likely btwn 1990-95)
So, is this enough info to search the database with? Is there any more characteristics that are included in the database?
Thank you all for your help - I would really like to figure out who he is!

I just noticed there is a better database search on the ATA. I can sort through the offspring of the suggested stallions but unfortunately it doesn't show markings. It's a start, though!
Do the letters in the registration numbers mean anything (ORB/OSB, A/B/C/D?)

If at all possible, maybe one way to narrow down the search would be to see if the ATA keeps records of which horses are branded every year. Hopefully that would give you a small number of gray colts or geldings to investigate. Sorry if this has already been addressed, did not have the time to review the whole thread. Good luck !

Okay, so I've been trying to figure out the brand prefixes.
If a horse has the double antler brand, he is purebred and therefore is ORB-A or OSB-A (assuming he's not imported), right?
If I do this right, here's a recent pic of my big guy and his new half-arab girlfriend

Is the antler brand underlined? If yes, he is American bred. If no, he is imported. And are you 100% it's the Trakener brand? I think Rhinelander also uses antlers as "logo". Also, is it in any way possible that he is 1/2 Arab or 1/2 TB? If the dam was either Arab or TB and approved by the ATA in the PSB, the resulting foals can wear antlers, not the 1/2 Trak brand.

Yeah, the brand is underlined.
I don't think he's 1/2 arab because he's big and not very "refined"

I just saw this thread now, he does remind me of the Schikendanz Abdullah line horses I've seen, the head is very similar. Any newer close up photos? My friend has a horse in my barn who could be his twin, he's an Abdullah grandson, his sire is up in Oregon, and is 1/2 TB, 1/2 Trak...I'll get his name, and see how's he's registered...I'm not sure if he is full ATA, or registered Selle Francais, but I'll check...

This horse has a double antler brand, which means he is pure bred Trakehner. Therefore his sire had to have been fully approved. I don't know of any half TB fully approved Trakehner stallions standing in Oregon. It looks, however, like the brand is small, which would indicate that the horse was branded when he was older than a foal.
