Jingles and prayers for a continued speedy recovery.  I'm so glad that you caught her in time and were able to get her to UF.  I took my boy there when he had an impaction colic and they were so professional and compassionate.  But of course you know she's in great hands.  We'll keep thinking of you all -and what a great team you have in your family.  My best to you all.

So glad that Val is coming around so well and quickly. The UF sound like an excellent clinic. It is wonderful that most of us live where we can make the drive to a equine hospital before the horse has no hope. Your horses  have such a  great support group. They are blessed.

Hi Anissa,

So sorry you and Val had to go through this - ugh!  Fairwell had colic surgery October 31, 2007.  It was scary as heck, as you know.  But, she is doing wonderful now!  We are back to riding 5 days a week and I even showed her a few weeks ago and got high score for open at the show.  I had planned to give her a year off, but with Lady being pregnant, Fairwell had to step back up to the plate.  I do not think she wanted a whole year off anyways - she likes to have a job.

I have her on a strict diet of alfalfa and succeed and minimal coastal hay.  She looks great and is doing just fine - knock on wood.

So, there is a good out come story for you.  Just hang in there and this too shall pass my friend!

Hugs,

Stacey

You know I've ALWAYS been a HUGE Gator fan (in the blood LOL), but now I'm even more so.... I just cannot say enough good things about how well they are treating my mare at UF and how nice they have been to mom and me.  They were johnny on the spot with diagnosing her and getting her stablized then ready for surgery.  It has been the shinning star in this whole terrible thing.

Val continues to do very well and is well on her way to recovery.

Quick update....

UF called this am and said that Val could come home tomorrow and that she is doing GREAT!   Grin Grin Grin  We can't get her until Sat since I really can't get off work easily until then (so they are boarding her until we can come down - I have a feeling she won't mind as she is living the high life right now LOL).

My vet was out here today to check Chloe for possible breeding tomorrow (hcg given today - cross fingers for tomorrow's breeding!) and he asked about her.  He was happy and pleasantly surprised she was doing so well.  He was glad that she ended up going down there as things would have been way different if she had not gone to the clinic!

Happy dances here tonight!!!  Grin

Happy dance in Illinois too.  Don't forget a picture of you, Val, and Patty when you feel Val is picture-worthy.  Of course, all of us out here who have been pulling for her recovery don't give a hoot what she looks like right now because we're just sooooo happy she pulled through, and we know she'll be her own beautiful self in time.

I know Eileen!  The TK world is a pretty tight world after all (filled with great people!).  I can't wait to see her Sat and bring her home.

And her baby will be glad to see her, too.  If you don't want to wean early, you could put them right back together.  Cheesy

Thanks Joy - Patty is already weaned though.  And since it has been a week, not so sure that Val has milk either.  It is earlier than I normally do, but really it won't hurt Patty much.  She was sucking Val dry as it was and now that Val has lost even more weight thanks to the colic surgery etc I am not interested in adding more stress to her.  Patty eats her feed like the big girl she is - she has been going out with Emma (my 2007 Oskar filly) and they are getting on like a house on fire.  I actually have another two fillies I need to wean sooner rather than later so Patty will have plenty of friends to comiserate with (I'm just waiting till I can be here all day when I do it).

I'm glad to hear she's doing so well.  So far as the mare is concerned, it's amazing just how quickly they can regain their milk when nursing begins again.  I "weaned" my filly for two months, and when they were put together again, it took only 3 or 4 days before she'd convinced mom to take her back...and no time at all after that for the milk to start flowing again.

I agree, if the mare is being pulled down badly, early weaning is the thing to do.

Val is home... but man is she pitiful!  She is fine in terms of eating, pooping, etc.  She did get a bit of an infection that happened yesterday so they had to drain the incission site and THAT is just gross (will drain for almost 2 weeks aprox).  She has lost a lot of weight (and is on a hay only diet for 6 weeks - T and A only pretty much).  And she has what looks like bed sores on all pressure points/joints (hips, shoulder, etc).  She is happy to be home and keeps coming over to "hug" me (she puts her head on top of my head or she will lean her head into my chest), but she is sad looking and she knows it.   Cry

We did take a photo of her at the vet clinic - don't know if it turned out or what it looks like... if it is ok, I'll post it later on.

Here is a photo of me, the tech that was working with her (or one of them at least) and Val.  She is actually skinner than what she looks like in the photo and you can't see her "bed sores"... bless her heart (just got done hand grazing her and cleaning boo boos and she is such a trooper about it all!).

Oh, so happy she is home.  She will recouperate so much faster at home.  Sorry you have to mess with infection/drainage.  What with little Allie and now Val you will earn your Vet's lisence in no time.  Smiley  Smiley  Smiley

So glad to hear she is home and on the mend!

She will bounce back once she is back on full feed. You should have seen how skinny she was when she first came to me several years ago. A few months later she looked great.
She's a good eater!
And I know she is in the best possible place there with you to watch over her.  I have no doubt that she knows that!

I've been thinking of you alot since our last email! I'm so happy to hear it's turning out well....

I agree with Eileen "some of us who rarely post..." (or not as often as they would like!) but it doesn't mean we aren't thinking of you just the same.

Take care Anissa!

Thanks guys - you really don't know what it means to hear this right now.  Val is fine, thank goodness.  She is actually starting to really bloom again and is much more perky.
