Please keep Anissa and her lovely Anglo-Trakehner mare Pennant's Valentine in your thoughts. Valentine has a terrible case of colic which their vet was not able to get under control so they trailered her 4+ hours to the University of FL. Last time I spoke to her she said she does have a significant impaction colic and they are trying to use meds but are prepared to start surgery if she doesn't turn around quickly. Sweet Patty had to stay home because it wasn't safe for her in the trailer with her dam.

Thanks for letting us know. Anissa just got over all that worry about corey, and now this with valentine. Prayers for Anissa and prayers and jingles for Valentine. I hope Anissa's Mom is still at Anissa's house. When it rains it pours.

Just spoke to Anissa. They operated on Valentine and she says it seems to be a success (she watched the surgery) but she hadn't talked to the vet yet. She said they pulled a lot of stuff out of there and she could see that there was no way it could have passed on it's own.
She found Valentine colicing and tangled up in the fence first thing this morning so this has been a very long day. She sounded really tired so I didn't want to keep her on the phone. They've already checked into a hotel and not sure if she will have email access right now or not. She did say she would give me an update in the morning and I will definitely share the news with everyone.
Keep the good thoughts coming.

Thanks for the news. Anissa, sending you good vibes for Valentine from Michigan! Been there, bought the t-shirt, and it's a rough road. Hopefully everything will go alright for your girl!

I just got off the phone with Anissa around 7:15 this morning. Valentine was doing well as of 10 p.m. last night when she last saw her and the vet said they would call if anything changed. She hadn't heard from them so she expects everything is as to be expected. She said that last night Valentine was very shakey from the anaesthesia but she came over to her and rested her head on her shoulder like she always does. Anissa is on her way over to the University to see her one more time before they go home. Valentine will stay there for 5 days. I would imagine that Anissa should be getting home sometime early to mid-afternoon and will post more details after she gets some rest and takes care of the horses.

Wow, this was kind of a nice surprise... I didn't have time to post anything before we left, nor did I have access to internet till I got home. Exhausted doesn't even begin to describe how tired I am.
Turns out, it was not an impaction colic, but her large colon was displaced. There was no way she would have gotten better without surgery and if we hadn't left when we had we wouldn't have made it. She got to UF and about 15 mins later started to try to go down so we made it just in time (she didn't go down in the trailer).
The surgery was very interesting. They took her in around 6:30 or so and finished up around 9. We got to see her around 10 after she got up and was moving again. She was still in her padded cell though. It is kind of odd seeing your horse's guts spread all over the table though. They removed ALOT of stuff from her - never knew there was so much stuff in a horse LOL. She is cut from stem to stern though bless her heart.
Yesterday was just horrific. I was feeding and as I'm going out to the barn I wondered why Tate was whinnying so much. All of the horses were looking toward the top paddock. I start counting heads (I do that every am/pm) and at the top paddock I see Chloe, Sara... hmmm where is patty and Val? Oh, there is Patty... where is Val?? See a brown lump, and my heart/stomach dropped. As I got closer I thought for sure she was gone - her lips were rolled back, eyes open... not moving... Finally about 2 feet from her with me yelling and hitting the ground etc she moved her head. She had got her leg stuck between a fence post and the fence wire.... don't ask me how this happened, what a freak accident. Luckily her LEG is not injured beyond superficial cuts. BUT I knew it was bad when she would not get up or stay up without beating her. Left her long enough to call the vet who made it to my house in record time. She was given 3 kinds of pain meds with no effect, so on the trailer she went.
At UF she was met by a team of 8 people who started working on her - her heart rate (this was with some drugs from earlier remember) was 72 to start! Pain meds, belly taps, etc.... They opted to try and work on her medically instead of surgically first and "zonked" her (according to her very nice Irish Vet) with some very heavy duty pain meds. Wait and see 2 - 3 hours... pain got worse so into surgery.
She has an excellent prognosis though - her intestines were not compromised in anyway. Everything was nice an pink. She is being much loved by her team of vets, residents, students, and techs - they all kept remarking what a GREAT girl she is. They were very impressed with how sensible she is throughout all of this. She woke up from surgery as if waking up from a nap. I saw her last night and she perked up her ears and nickered at me and came over and put her head ontop of my head (her sign of affection), then put her head on my chest for a long time. She did the same thing today - we were there for about 30 or 45 mins this am with her. The whole time she never took her eyes off me. She got groomed today by me and her main Vet (the Irish girl). She ate some alfafa while we were there and drank water. She will be at UF for another 5 days at least for recovery. Stall rest for 30 days, then 30 days in a 20 x20 grass paddock. Amazingly, we were told she could be bred in 3 mnths if we wanted to (don't think we would/are, but that surprised me).
Thank god I found her when I did and my vet came quickly and realised that she needed to go to a clinic immed and didn't try and treat her himself! I have nothing but awesome things to say about UF - they have not only allowed me to really be a part of my mare's treatment, but have been excellent with her.
We are going back next weekend to pick her up and bring her home.
Thanks for everyone's good wishes and I'll keep you posted!

Oh, what a great mare you have, and what a great owner Valentine has. I'm typing this with tears in my eyes. It just wasn't her time to go. Are you going to try to bucket feed her baby or just wean her? How's Val doing in the drying up department? Many hugs to you and all your horses. There are a lot of people praying for you and Val.

You're right Barb - it wasn't her time to go. Patty is just getting straight weaned. She's old enough she doesn't need the bucket. Val had some milk drainage but I'm sure that UF is monitering her with everything - and she isn't allowed grain for 6 weeks so that will dry her up pretty quick.
The vet from UF (Dr. Coley) just called me and told me that she is doing great - she is very "bright" and has been scarfing up her hay. She is becoming the class favorite down there. I swear she ins't going to want to come home - they are hand grazing her 3 x a day starting tomorrow, they groom her 2 x per day, there is always someone there near her stall to pet her and love on her... she is being spoiled rotten.

Wow I'm so glad things turned out all right for you. I have been where you are now, with a mare that needed surgery due to displaced intestines, and she made a 100 % recovery. So, your mare does stand an excellent chance at being totally correct, even for more baabies in the next few years. I do wish you the best of luck Annissa !

Thanks Shawnda for the first hand knowledge - it helps knowing that mares can make it through this. I was shocked when they told me 3 mnths!
Yes Wendi - it was a long haul, we actually made it to UF in just over 3 hours (speed limits??) including going through an ag station - they really pushed us through fast all we had to do was say that we had a horse that needed surgery on board and they went into high gear.
LM - Val had not been rebred yet. We did P and E on her and had her and Chloe timed to be checked on Tues night and bred Wed. That won't happen now obviously (chloe will val won't).
Patty is still confused, but is doing well. She eats her grain/hay and is drinking water etc. She is staying close to Chloe and Sara who she had been turned out with prior to all of this. She isn't whinnying anymore calling for her mom which is a plus.

Suzette - I love this girl more and more everyday. She and I are pretty bonded (were before this happened). I'm just beyond grateful that I found her when I did and that we got her to UF when we did. Not doing surgery was not an option on her - and if we hadn't done surgery she would not have made it.
Vet has called this am and she is doing great still. She is such a tough mare with such a sensible mind - that helps tremendously. Friday was hard and I wouldn't wish such an experience on my worst enemy, but she is getting better everyday and if I hadn't thought she was doing great we woulnd't have left Gainesville.

I may just do that Barb... Will depend on how she is looking - she was pretty rough on Sat from the surgery (esp after nursing el piggo Patty for almost 4 months!).

Quick update - heard from the vet this afternoon (they are calling me twice a day to give me updates).
She was laughing and you could tell that she was very happy when she was talking to me. She said that Val is doing "really well" she has a GREAT appetite and is chowing down on all the hay/grass she can eat. She is also peeing and pooping normally today!!!! (best news yet).
We are well on our way to recovery! (and yes, I truely believe in the power of jingles/prayers!).

Thanks Carol, but I couldn't have done it without my parent's help. Financially or otherwise. This mare was just worth trying to save and we couldn't not try.
