Soft-Ride Boots
« on: June 08, 2008, 08:52:15 PM »

I just ordered a pair of these for my 17 y.o. mare, who had a minor bout with laminitis this spring.  She's sound now, but I think she may have seen the end of her grass days, since this is the third time.  I got the boots, which have inserts, to assure her comfort if she's ridden.  Does anyone have any experience with them?  How well do they work?

Joy, I'm not specifically familiar with the soft-ride boots, however, a friend of mine has a Haflinger who is essentially diabetic with thyroid issues and has had regular mini-episodes of laminitis in the past.  She uses easy-boots to drive him on anything other than sand or good turf, and it works exceptionally well, as shoes restricted the horse's circulation (thus inhibiting any real healing) and didn't protect the soles anyhow.  I'd say you're right on with the boot idea.

Also, are you sure it's the grass?  I know a couple ponies who can eat all the grass in the world and be fine - white clover and corn turned out to be the laminitis triggers.  I know you know better than to feed  a horse straight corn, but clover can be sneaky if you have it small amounts and the horse loves it and looks for it.  Just a thought.

Thanks, fuzzy.  I hadn't thought about clover, and there's a lot of it in an around the orchard area.  She's absolutely sound right now, but she's being a camp horse for kids right now, and not allowed on grass.  She'll be home the end of August and I'm thinking of putting a grazing halter on her after I get her used to grass again--and watch her carefully.

She hasn't needed the boots yet, but they do fit her well, so if she ever needs them again, they'll be there.  With September comes the apple harvest and I'll be locking her out of the orchard.  I'd like to think she'll never need to wear those boots again.  Between Bowen technique and homeopathy, she recovered very, very quickly the last two times; but I don't want to tempt the fates and invite more problems.   Tongue
