Happy Birthday Satinka!
« on: May 22, 2008, 01:52:52 PM »

Today is Satinka’s 4th birthday!  When Satinka (Hennessey X Spencer Road xx) was born, it was a difficult delivery. Once Satinka was placed correctly, mom was too tired to do much pushing so the neighbors helped and so did Satinka.  Once she got her front legs free she tried to pull herself out.  Well she still has that same energy level.  Last week, she decided standing still for mounting was boring so we started back working on that (she’s super green still – she went to a trainer in the fall for a basic start but haven’t been able to do much with her in the winter).  So, I go to lunge lightly on Monday planning to then work on the mounting thing again only she decided the lunge line was for play.  She bucked, she reared, she put her head down and snaked it around and struck out with her front hooves. I had to watch to make sure she didn’t get wrapped up in the lunge line. Basically, every time she did it I just concentrated on getting her forward again until she eventually did what I had initially asked which was to walk.

So, I’ve gone back to basic lunging training and she’s been great for the last two days.  I worked her first yesterday and her sister last.  When I put her sister back in the pasture, Satinka turned into obnoxious brat and began pushing her sister around, literally (sis is usually in charge).  When sis finally put her foot down, Satinka created her own cross country course.  The pasture is small and slants down into a ditch running through the middle and then back up to the fence line by the road.  Satinka would gallop down the hill, jump the ditch, gallop up the other side, jump a patch of weeds, turn around and gallop back down and jump the ditch again.  At one point she stopped, panting, got a small drink and then started all over again.  She must have done this for 5 mintues.  Oh well, at least she behaved while I was working her!  And this is supposed to be a dressage horse!  Hmmmm….

I'm starting to wonder if she spent much time at the trainers last fall watching the other horses.  They just gave her a walk/trot start but it was at an eventing barn and they do have a cross country course.  Sure didn't get the idea from ME.   Shocked

Sounds like she is having a rolliking good time.  Maybe she is trying to tell you "dressage is too tame for me."  Cheesy
