Sidney delivered a gorgeous (and I mean GORGEOUS!) filly by Oskar on April 15. She is adorable and I'm in love! That's the good news. The bad news is that Sidney is very ill but hanging in there. She's being treated by excellent vets and we are all hoping that she will pull through. Everyone give their mares a big hug!
Here is Sidney's imp at 5 days old.

Wow, look @ all that chrome! Definitely the year for fillies (darn it, KNEW I should have bred one of mine!).
Sending best wishes for Sidney.

Oh Heather... she is beatutiful!!! I LOVE me some Oskar!!!! Don't you just wish you had a barnfull of him now??? I swear I look at my mares everyyear and figure out who I'm NOT breeding to him instead of who I will breed to him! Anxiously awaiting a full sibling to last year's foal, and find out next week if Valentine caught to him this year.
How is your mare? ??

Thanks everyone! Sidney is doing much better, though she'll be on meds for awhile. She had septic peritonitis post-foaling and it was pretty scary.
Here is the filly at 10 days!

Heather, I'm not sure you noticed, but you forgot to dip one leg in the can of white paint. She's one more outstanding chestnut filly for you.

Ever notice how LEGGY those Oskar foals are? I've loved that stallion since I first laid eyes on him, and his foals just confirm my first impression. Drool...

Joy, I do agree with your comments. Too bad I have no mare for such a stallion.

Heather, she just gets more and more lovely! I swear, there is yet to be an Oskar foal that I don't just LOVE - some are better than others, but they are all just fantastic. It is such a shame that he has been so underused in the past. Joy - I completly agree - three things you can count on coming from that stallion is LEGS that go one for miles, and daddy's movement (or improvement of the mare's movement), and a wonderful temperament.
Glad to hear Sidney is doing better! Geez this has been a rough foaling season for some breeders!!!

Oskar, oh man, I love that boy, Anissa knows! I need to get some dips on his swimmers before it is too late. Heather, she is my favorite, I love her! Now yes, I am partial to read headed girls with chrome, but, that is not just it with her, she is fabulous. How is the colt from last year? Vigo? I thought he was a looker too!

Joy & Sally,
The most likely reason is that a piece of intestine gets jammed between the foal and pelvis during birth. Luckily it only bruised the intestine instead of tearing it wide open (and yes that definitely can happen during foaling). She had bacteria and plant cells in her abdominal tap, so the intestines leaked a small amount of fluid from the bruising. Her bloodwork from this morning was completely normal with Fibrinogen down to normal and white bloodcells normal!!! Woohoo!
Foaling was normal, though the baby was slightly large for the mares size. I wouldn't say it's the largest foal she's had, though. She wasn't quite right and the vet was out about 12 hours post-foaling. My therio vet calls these things foalings accidents that are not foreseeable, not preventable and luckily pretty rare.
