Read this on AERC and thought it might be of interest to some of the folks interested in endurance riding. It is a growing sport and membership in a time when some equine memberships are dwendling. There is something to this distance riding that is appealing and it is growing in the USA and abroad.
They have some pretty interesting statistics on that page. A newbie to the sport probably wouldn't realize that the horses in endurance can and do compete into their late 20's. I have met several of these horses and they are very fit, healthy and young looking. This sport is a natural thing for horses to do, and I personally believe they stay sound longer because they are brought along in their fitness levels slowly and have little collection, not like most other sports where collection happens early and often.
