It wouldn't let me vote twice. I got to vote for my chestnut, but not for my bay.

Guys, polls only allow one vote. The database keeps track of who voted already and won't let you do it more than once. Kind of makes sense, since otherwise your results could be really skewed. I think the kind of information you are collecting is more of a survey than a poll, so it doesn't quite fit in the format.

This would be better if you could rank the colors in the order you like them-- I have a CH and a dark bay... so for me:
1) dark bay 2) chestnut 3) buckskin (ok, I know there aren't any Traks this color) 4) black 5) pinto 6) grey

I've got way too many horses to list them by color--but dark bay does predominate. Interestingly enough I have an ango-trakehner filly by Hadrian who can't really be called anything but a palomino--although I suppose some purist may find some description in the chestnut family. The color thing that really gets me is my three pintos. It really must be the mare line--two of them are out of one mare--and the other is out of her twin sister. All three have different sires. Go figure.

[img][/img] Our Butow gelding "Al" is a bay, not dark, somewhat bright now that he is in the sun (well if you can call it that - here in NJ it has rained since November.)....And he is a lover~ we waited a long time to bring him home, but we now have the farm! "Renaissance Farm" after my daughters horse whom is worth his weight in gold.....Al is 5 has just been backed and will be trained by daughter and trainer ... so exciting!

I have Trakehner breds in more then one color too, but listed bay for the color of my three year old gelding. I wonder though, if anyone could tell me by looking at his attached photo, what gene is responsible for his silver tail? He has a very black mane and forelock, but is tail is silver/flaxen on the bottom (not a rabicano pattern, it is black on top, no roaning on flanks) - also, though this photo is a bit dark, his legs are not very dark either and have almost a light silver frosting over the black? He is by Veneziano (homozygous black I am told) out of a liver chestnut Arabian mare (who also expresses a minimal amount of silver hairs in her tail and mane, but very dark throughout her body with no lightening on the legs). Can it be a flaxen gene expressed on a bay? I have a yearling filly out of the same mare by Happy Hour - gorgeous rich looks to be liver chestnut but getting very blond in the mane and tail - could end up flaxen? I'm just curious if my guy will lose the silver in his tail, though at three, it hasn't changed much - quite striking when he waves it around!

Curious - have you ever picked at his tail to see if there's any pink skin where the silver hair starts? My only other thought is that he's got a small dose of the gene that produces the VERY sharp siver dapple color that we see sometimes in ponies and Kentucky and Rocky Mountain gaited horses.
Anyhow, I can imagine that tail looks just awesome when he's waving it around.

I have look at the skin of his tail, no pink skin, the silver hair are just more abundant near the end of his tail then the top, but there are a few strands growing from near the top. Also, I've clipped his legs, and while the skin is black (where he doesn't have white, which is on all fours!), the silver frosting remains consistent even when clipped. He does have a large blaze to the end of his nose, but no white on his under lip or body spots, his body coat color is a very even, but richly colored bay (with his blaze, very black mane and body color, he almost looks neon colored in full sunlight). I reread my earlier post and meant to say that although his dam sports a few silver hairs, her tail is quite dark otherwise - hence my curiosity when both Mario and his half sister express this flaxen effect on their tails (and mane on the filly), and the filly also seems to have the lightening effect on her legs. This mare has had another filly by a Hanoverian stallion, almost solid bay, not dilution effect - it could still come from her, but wondering if this silvering effect, especially on the bays, shows up on other Trakehners?

I have a colt, by Hadrian out of Loretta, which is a very rich chestnut, flaxen tail, born with a flaxen mane which has now turned "salt & pepper"!!!! Have yet to see any grey hairs on his body though..... I am very interested to see what happens in the spring when he sheds his winter woolies!! I have only seen one other horse with this combination of dark chestnut body with a salt & pepper mane, but it's tail was also salt and pepper, not flaxen. Very interesting looking!!
We had a colt a couple of years ago, again by Hadrian, out of Ciekew, which was a golden bay, high white socks, black points on knees and hocks with gold mixed in, solid black mane, tail that had every color you can imagine, and a dorsal stripe!! He was a VERY flashy Boy!!

Gina, my Stiletto filly sounds like your colt. She was very basic chestnut but now her mane is coming in very dark, there are more white hairs coming in on her already flaxen tail. She could gray like her daddy but I haven't seen white hairs anywhere on her body. Like you, I'll be interested to see what the spring shed brings (oh please let that be soon!) Karen
