Mercedes Dam Information

I am new to both the list and to owning a horse.  Mercedes is a neglect rescue that is a story of its own.  My specific question here relates to the hope I can discover her Dam.

She is @ 17-18 years old, sired by Marcus.  I tried contacting the farm that had Marcus between mid 80's to mid 90's, but never got a response.  According to ATA Marcus had sired to a few unregistered mares between 90' - 91'.

She was trained to possible 2nd lvl dressage and had fox hunted (so I was told).  I have pictures of her as she is today, at this web site:

but if any of this rings a bell please let me know.  One other questions relates to DNA, if she came from an unregistered mare it would not help?

Can a DNA sample be compared against all mares to see if there is a match?  Did the do DNA testing back in 90-91 or earlier?

In the end it is not that important for her or for me, but I hate loose ends.  Maybe she deserves the chance to be registered given her sire.  Any help would be very appreciated.
