She is a real beauty. You must be an expert at braiding by now--have it all down pat. There must be a lot of shows in your area or do you travel far and wide?

Thanks for the compliment, I think we all worry about being barn blind! So it helps to hear someone else thinks they look good too, thank you. I know we think she is beautiful, she has a distinct way of looking at you, I don't know if it is her eyes, or how she holds herself- she can be very captivating & regal. I have certainly passed braiding 101 this summer LOL. Had my doubts on if I could do it. And wonder what it will be like taking more than one horse to show, will have to find out who will keep braids in all night & do that one a day earlier! That & teach Josh to braid too. We have a system now that works pretty well--- so glad we finally got it down, Faith goes into what we call 'braiding mode' now and just snoozes when we start fussing with her mane.
We are blessed to have two active show grounds within two hours drive for us, so we have been able to go to several shows with her this season. We certainly got accomplished what we set out to do, she is most certainly comfortable about being hauled around, stabled elsewhere and braided, bathed clipped, etc. It is about more than earning a ribbon or points, it is about what she & we become by the process & it has been a great bonding experience for my son & I as 1/2 the time we went just the two of us. He (Josh) is getting very good at taking photos & will enter some in the fair next year. And has high ambitions now in showing horses himself.
I can't believe we made it to the showgrounds yesterday, we had to go through two flooded roads on the way there, and then on the way back, the police had those roads completely closed because of the flood waters, nearly every show has had some type of adventure or hardship to it to overcome, and that has been a great learning experience for all of us!

She really is beautiful, Christina. Do you take her by herself or with another horse?

I think your son should think about a career in horse photography. He does an excellent job.

Going back in this thread, it looks like Faith is only a 2 y.o. Is that right, Christina? That's pretty young to be under saddle!

Faith is two. I guess it is a personal choice of what age to start and how much work they should have. Many of our western performance friends start theirs in April of the two year old year, so do the walker folk and others. I think it is personal preference & we don't do anything collected, just straight fwd riding. Derby is two and is being started now also. Last picture is of her this spring.
We start playing around with them young, and start into work lightly. Junior was also started young, he is five now and great and totally sound/healthy/happy. The horses I personally know started at two, have grown up healthy & happy-- so though I have heard of problems with others starting two year olds...maybe those horses were over worked or ridden by heavier riders? Not sure about what has gone with others horses, though Faith is quite strong & very happy to work. We don't over work her, in fact she isn't worked even every week. Just lightly, and just enough that she knows what her saddle is & what her job is. In fact, I'd say she loves going somewhere in the trailer now, and is blissful down the trail. She has a funny face and short neck in the picture from the trail riding parking lot because a big gelding burst out from behind a trailer and startled her & Josh pulled back. We also try to use a side pull or hackamore instead of a bridle for as long as possible.

Very pretty girl. She is looking good - looks like her sire.
Thank you, She is coming along nicely & loves going places. We even came up on two bucks sparing off in the woods, she was startled, though stood her ground, didn't buck or bolt. Not bad for a two year old. Extra stimulus exposure is the other reason we start them young. She was ponied from Baily last season and the begining of this season. She seems to really enjoy it. She is very strong in her topline, joints, hindquarters, shoulder & neck. Intelligent & craves attention. Also, because we started fussing with her earlier, she is so accustom to Josh climbing on her, he can just jump on halter and leadrope, and ride her in from the fields. Nice to know she has a good understanding of what is expected of her. She hasn't been in very challenging work, though she shows already that she eagerly handles the trail, sand, rocks, hills and fields with a smile. Sets a nice easy pace and recovers great and quickly. If she makes it into Competitive Trail as a four year old, she should be more than ready to carry Josh very respectably for 25 miles, no problem.
Isn't it true that the Trakehner stallion prospects were started in Trakehnen in winter of the 2 y.o. season, so they were ready for the 3 y.o. testing? The only time I have seen trouble in starting horses young is in heavy or daily work that requires collection, quick stops, fast turns, speed or prolonged time of work. Blessings to you all, Christina~

Call me a product of my upbringing, but I've never been a fan of early riding. I prefer to wait until they're 4, or 3-1/2 at the very earliest. They may look mature, but they're not. Their joints are still growing, and even though "their knees are closed", there are places in their backs and other places that are not.

If so, I can only guess these horses were quickly put into the breeding shed, and most of them were not destined for a lifetime of performance.
You've never seen a problem, but I have, and the soundness issues usually show up when they're in their early to middle teens.
There's so many things one can do with a young horse without backing them. And of course, it's JMO.

Faith trooped out another Novice Competitive Trail Ride this weekend, finishing in fine fashion. Planning on stepping up to 25 miles maybe this autumn, though she is *just* turned five, so we are keeping it slow right now, and just enjoying riding for the mileage. So far she has 24 (two 12's) miles towards her 1000 mile horse Award. Saturday:) was a good day, and her sister, Grace also was awarded a completion on her 12 mile CTR. On Sunday, Faith's dam won third place in her Novice CTR carrying our 7 year old daughter. (she was ponyed most of the way,and this was our daughter's first time in competion). On Saturday morning, Faith's sire, Karino's Fire won Best Conditioned horse in the 25 Mile Limited Distance, and 7th place. Not bad for his first time in distance riding since 2007. It was a fun, family weekend
