Amy,
I am in CA (Los Angeles). There are some GREAT farms in your "area", all SD county. Mary Jensen has her horses in Termecula, among them Pavarotti and Helca; Pam Duffy has her really beautiful place in Temecula too, she has a band of 11 mares, all breeds, 4 Trakehners. And she and her husband are also just super nice people. Gretchen Lassater has her farm in Pauma Valley, and that's a gorgeous place to see too, although she is moving up North I think.
Then in great LA, there is a pretty strong group of Trak people, and of course, LA is hosting the ATA 2008 Annual Meeting and we plan to make it special
So once you're here, let us know and don't miss the inspections in CA. One that is a must for me this year is the mare and stallion inspection at Fantasy Farms in Nipomo, Sherry Tourino.
Welcome to the West!

I am in the LA area just west of Santa Monica. The area is called Topanga Canyon. Maren has a better idea of who is in west SD county than I but Welcome!! It is nice to have another Trak enthusiast in the area.
Janice Quinlan is in Riverside County. She owns Sieg and is very nice.
It would be great to sponsor a Trak booth or function as some of the bigger shows this year. There are several annual events at the LAEC in August that should have a good representation of Traks showing. Also, DG Bar and Del Mar shows are always fun and we should try to get a small group together for dinner or something and make it an annual tradition!

If you get to Central CA, I'm due east of Willy Arts & DG Bar Ranch.
All our horses are Trakehners: Klassic Hour by Happy Hour is our current "prince"; a broodmare still due, bred to Kobra by Gilbraldi, etc. etc. My retired competition mare is a combination of the Condus and Kasparite lines. And we plan on breeding more babies next year.
Visitors always welcome here at River Ridge Trakehners.

Amy... call me later, but Sherry is FANTASTIC, a very nice lady with a big heart. Gretchen is also super nice.
Hey, I think that we are going to fly out for the convention next year so we'll finally get to meet face to face! LOL!

Amy,
I moved to LA from Atlanta in 1996 and shipped my older mare here 8 months later after she had weaned a foal. I have also now shipped three other horses (all from Vermont). My older mare was also in VT being bred to Enrico Caruso while I handled moving, finding a new job and relocation.
While the shipping process makes you sleepless, I am sure that your horses will be fine. Just use a reputable professional shipper and give them some time off when they get here to adjust.
The biggest problem for me is generally my lack of sleep until they get here. And of course, make sure that they are boostered with vaccines about a week or two before you ship them. With all of the bug born stuff, and a horse shipping across country, you need to be certain that a bit in Mississippi will not be an issue in California. (I always remind myself that at least they aren't FLYING!!)
Welcome and we will all be happy to hear when you and your horses have safely arrived.
And the dressage instruction here in So. Cal is great! Lots of knowledgable people, big shows with big names. It can be a nice community to participate in.

When I moved my horses from Colorado to Maine, one of my mares (newly pregnant) refused to eat or drink for the first couple of days. I was getting very panicked. Finally I offered her a few different essential oils. When she got to Sweet Orange, she practically ate the bottle. At that point, I massaged a dab on a few acupressure points (I'd have to look them up) and within 5 minutes she started eating and drinking. The oil, of course, would change with the horse. One stallion at an inspection was constantly pacing. His choice was lavender, and almost immediately he settled down and began to eat and drink, and on him I massaged the oil only on one point on the nose/upper lip.
The point is, that if someone with even a little knowledge takes a few minutes, the problem may be quickly resolved.

Amy, although I don't live in Calif. I do visit Palm Desert annually for a reprieve from our Washington rain. I usually try and make it down when the HITS show at Thermal (formerly at Indio). Its the big hunter-jumper winter circuit and a destination for most of the folks from here. Maybe we can set up a Trak enthusiasts day at the show, maybe Horalas will compete
