I LOVE Trakehners!

My yearling keeps having a mild problem with one of his lymph glands under his jaw. Since last fall, the same gland swells, breaks open, goes partially down, swells up again and continues the cycle. The cycle is irregular in terms of length of time to complete a cycle. His blood work is normal, no high white count, no low red count, right in the norms for the rest, including magnesium.
The gland never goes totally down and the other side is not involved.
He is usually bright eyed and bushy tailed. He has had a couple of times when he didn't act like he felt great but those were very few, very short lived and didn't necessarily correspond to when the gland was especially swollen. No fever. Slick shiny coat. Eats very well. No cough. No other symptoms.
The vet says it is not strangles. He thinks it may be an overactive/over sensitive lymph gland. Right now the only solution he can offer is to remove the gland -- which he does not want to do -- and neither do I.
Any ideas?

I had the same thing with one of our fillies years ago. As a weanling and an early yearling it kept swelling, bursting and draining. No temp, no other symptoms. I was embarassed to let anyone see her this way! We warm compressed it at times to help it drain. The vet told me she would outgrow it and I am pleased to say she has. No such problems in year two or year three. Hope yours progresses the same way.

That gives me hope! It certainly doesn't seem to bother him other than being sore before it drains. It does seem to be getting longer between drain cycles.

He did check the teeth -- didn't find anything there-- but he is teething and chewing on everything he can get in his mouth.
Vet doesn't think it is allergic -- how would I check for allergies?

Find a good holistic, homeopathic vet and have them take the case. Homeopathy is so great for stuff like this, chronic NQR (not quite right) stuff that seems to come out of the blue.
