I love Trakehners!
|
I'm looking for more information about Patron, I can't find much about him, at least not that I can read.
Has anyone linebred to him? Good results? Thoughts?
It was recently brought to my attention that I will be line breeding/in breeding to him. It hadn't even occured to me. He's the great grand sire on the sire side of both my stallion and 2 of my mares. I'd appreciate any info, TIA.

Patron was one of the early success stories regarding the use of "east Prussian" horses in the modern Trakehner breed. Didn't G. Hoogan "discover" him? I think there was an article about this in one of the ATA publications, maybe Maren wrote it? There was some controversy about using these horses initially...breed direction wasn't the same...maybe not really a Trakehner anymore...maybe the pedigrees are not quite right...etc., etc. However, there is no denying that Patron had a very positive impact on the Trakehner breed.

Oh. Patron was a Trakehner alright, nothing "wrong about his pedigree", except the fact that he was a Polish import to Germany in the late 70s and that kind of thing was rather revolutionary in those days. Yes, GOttfried Hoogen brought him in from Liski, Poland. Patron carries a great deal of main stud blood in his pedigree.
"East Prussian" horses have always been all over the breed right after WWII, the stock that was rescued from Trakehnen was way too small to build a new breed, or tather maintain the old one. Some of the main stud's most famous sires were "East Prussian" stock, Dampfross for example.
Patron was used a LOT in Germany, he has over 100 registered daughters in the main stud book and his offspring were exceptional sport horses alike. He also sired a number of very infuential stallions in Germany, the most important ones being EH Sokrates and EH Mackensen. I met Patron on severa occasions, he was a jet black, deep-bodied stallion with a gentle eye, very substantial bone and excellent movement/jump. A classic representative of his "black herd" bloodlines and what Eastern Europe focused on in breeding sporthorses: a perfect blend of caliber and refinement. I really liked him.
I don't know if I would be linebreeding to him though. From today's perspective, he was an older type, and as it stands with these bloodlines, they tend to shine for generations, good and bad That means that as much as you double up on athleticism and rideability, you can also end up with a very heavy horse.
I definitely pay a lot of attention when I see Patron or direct descendands in a pedigree, especially if there is some TB or Arab blood close by.

Thanks for posting the photo, Maren. I've always liked seeing this in a bloodline through E.H. Sokrates or E.H. Mackenson.
Alicia, tell us more about your stallion & mares' pedigrees.
