What do you do for the biting flies?  We have lots of woods, a stream, a couple of ponds down the road -- wonderful fly breeding grounds.  We do use the fly traps for the black flies and stable flies and they work for those.

We have tried fly predators for several years -- couldn't really tell much difference.  Finally last year, we ended up spraying.  Hate to do that.  Takes so much to knock them down and keep them down.  Not good for anyone.

We have lots of songbirds too -- bluebirds, indigo buntings, scarlet tanagers, finches, cardinals, lots of birds.  I would really like to keep them around.

Thanks,
Eileen

Two years ago we bought a biting fly trap from Farnum.  It is made with black tarps, metal frame and clear plastic sheets over trays of soapy water.  Works on the theory that biting flies look for the general shape of a horse.  Uses no chemical attractants.  Biting flies bounce off of the clear plastic and drown in the soapy water.  You won't believe how many hundreds of "greenheads" and "bombers" we catch in a couple of days.  In our experience, it reduces big biting fly population in the immediate area, say within 400 yards of the trap.  We have seen similar traps on the news when the New Jersey or Delaware beaches put them up near the dunes.

I just did a search for Farnum and "biting fly" trap.  No hits.  Where did you find it?  I've had pretty good success with the fly predators, but biting flies don't come out until about August--and summer ends by September. Tongue

I did find another product. Is it like the one you mentioned, BayTraks?

I couldn't find one by Farnum either.

I found the same one you did, Joy.  This one was mentioned on another forum -- one person had used this one and said it worked quite well.

Anyone have anything else?

Thanks,

I checked the label on mine- the epps biting fly trap by Farnam.  I do not find it on their web site either, so I just sent them an email asking about it.  They promptly replied, "Hello,
We do not sell the equipment anymore, but I have a number where you can purchase the traps and parts.  Please call Mark at Horseline Products at 731-435-9167"

The other product seems to be a similar concept, but does not have the same appearance as the one I described.  Ours mounts on four 8-foot metal stakes and has black tarps.  Perhaps I will photograph it this year when we set it back up and post it for your entertainment!

Thanks for checking.  Was very thoughtful of you.  Appreciate it.

Hopefully someone else has a trap or something that works as well as yours does.

Thanks, again,
