Thick manes
« on: March 16, 2007, 08:24:50 PM »

My 10 month old filly has a thick, heavy mane, which is not surprising, since her dam does as well.  What I'm finding, though, is that her mane falls on both sides of her neck.  In fact, I can't figure out which side it really grows on.  My mare's mane was also falling on both sides for a while, but is now going back to normal.  They get plenty of good feed, supplements, free choice minerals, etc., so I don't think it's a nutritional issue, but... I'm at a loss to figure out why it's falling like that.  Does anyone have any ideas?  And how to figure out which side is the "right" side, so I can begin training it?  Undecided

Ah! May all my problems be so small! Cheesy

Several of my horses are over-achievers in the mane department and it isn't unusual to have mane all over the place especially when its thick. I pick a side, usually right as we show hunters and train it all over to that side with some serious hair gel and braided pigtails. That and pulling it so it is thinner usually does the trick. I do appreciate my TB mare who has a nice thin mane  Smiley
