Ingrid, I hope this is ok to post here.

One of the world's biggest stud farms, Gestüt Sommerlade, went into bankuptcy today. The farm has currently 300 horses, including 15 stallions and 70 mares in foal and due in 2007.

This place was built over a very short period of time and celebrated some pretty unique success stories, but a huge health issue for the owner plus some really bad luck, including a barn fire that destroyed the feed for an entire winter, left them crippled badly. The horses are all in good condition and well taken care of now, this is not the problem.

However, if any of you would like to purchase some super successful Trakehner blood for your breeding programs, as sad as it is, this is your chance. The bloodlines predominantly used here are EH Caprimond and EH Hohenstein, along with EH Latimer, K2, Cadeau, EH Gribaldi and EH Maizauber.

I'm not into this to make money. I would really like to help because this is a shocking situation for all involved with this breed in Germany. If you would like to receive any kind of info, please feel free to email me privately.

Feel free to pass this info out.

Wow, Maren, that is shocking news. I got the catalog of the Sommerlade stallions last fall and it was like looking through a candy store.

Do you know for certain that the horses will be dispersed, or could this be what we call a "reorganization" type of bankruptcy, if that is an option in Germany?

That is so sad.  What I would not give to be able to bring a Trakehner over for myself.  I hope that people are able to help.

Omigosh, how sad!  How I wish I could buy a horse or two and bring it here.  Maren, have you posted this to other boards?  This might be a great chance to get Trakehners into new hands.

I have had more feedback than I can handle....it has been overwhelming.

On the flip side, nothing is certain right now. The Verband is fighting hard to keep all the horses together, I think htey're dreaming of selling the whole place in one piece. Then of course, the banks have a BIG word in this. It might come to auction, it might actually go FOR the horses and they will allow to split this up privately.

Right now, we're waiting for the big meeting on friday. In the meantime, I'm working my butt off to get as many people on board as possible. I hope that once people realize there is no way this place will sell as a whole, all involved will come to their sense and see the HORSES well being first. If that well being involves to ship 50 Hohenstein daughters in into the world, so be it. Germany can't handle that amount of blood identity anyway. BTW, the Hanoverian breeders are MORE than interested themselves...I think this, with all the tragedy involed, is a HUGE chance for the breed as a whole, worldwide.

I'll keep you posted.
