I have never fed black sunflower seeds but know alot of people that do. They swear it enhances the coat color and puts on a nice shine. You have to make sure the seed doesnt have a coating on it as I have heard that isnt good for horses. I am not sure of what the coating is called. I have also heard of people feeding paprika with it that it is suppose to be the ultimate in combination on achieving the show coat look. I have never heard of any problems with colic from it. I have also heard it being used as a weight gainer. Although I never have used it, I have only heard good things about it.

I know several people who feed black sunflower seeds, and even those horses that have ulcers have never had a problem with the hulls. They love the sunflower seeds and it does seem to enhance the shine of the coats. It's important to get clean seed, though. I'm not especially a fan of Purina, but their black oil sunflower seed is very clean and doesn't contain anything else.

We have fed black oil sunflower seeds to every horse, every day for probably going on 5 years now. GREAT stuff. Palatable and a great contributor of unrefined fat and essential fatty acids.
Re: the paprika, I found it turned our dark horses orange-ish. Not so good.

I have fed the seeds to both of my horses. They are not on them now because I moved to a new barn and have since changed Frodo to Flax. I am going to put Bugs back on them, they are great of added fat and she needs it. It does make them shiney, VERY shiney, but it also will help their hooves. My two are barefoot, and Frodo has always been barefoot, and their feet are in great shape, they don't have chips and cracks and their feet don't look dry and shelly.
Paprika, I believe, was the cause of Frodo having colic when he was a yearling. He has only been on the paprika a couple of day and he had a colic episode. I have not given it to him since, but, supposedly, that is one of the ingredients in the supplement Black as Night.
