Is your horse young? Usually it is a virus and the older horses get an immunity to them. If you leave them alone they will eventually go away. You can try putting vaseline on them. I never used it but have friends say that that works also. I always just crushed a couple and let it bleed. This helps the immune system respond to them and gets rid of them in a couple of weeks. Crushing them isnt painful because warts dont have nerves. Just dont pull or try to pluck them from the skin because that will hurt. There is also something called wartoff or something like that you can buy, Iv"e never tried the product.

Warts are very contagious, don't forget to disenfect all brushes, clippers, halters, etc., and do not turn out with a herd. They should clear up with time and proper hygiene. Hope they start to disappear soon!
Contagion is a matter of the immune system. Just as one does not automatically get a cold if those around have colds, neither do warts spread to other horses if their immune systems are strong. Warts are a signal that there is something going on, a weakness somewhere in the immune system. So while you're doing other things to get rid of the warts, strengthen the immune system by avoiding stressors--of which overvaccination is one and preservatives in feed is another.
Homeopathically speaking, warts are a sign that the body is responding to stressors early; because the problems are at the skin level, rather than deeper.

Stacey-dont' hyperventilate about this--with young horses--this happens--it's fine--don't worry, be happy--I've not found in ten years that it is any more contagious than warts in people. Let time take care of it. If you've got older horses with this problem, I'd check with your vet--but my experience tells me, don't worry, be happy.

I've had warts on the young horses for years. Once they had them, their immune system's kicked in and they never got them again. I use Vitimin E cream from the drug store on them and have found that works faster than any of the "horse" bought products. Rub it on once a day until they are gone.
