Thank you everyone for the wonderful welcome.  I just love Mick - he is the greatest.  He just got new shoes yesterday for the first time ever and was a perfect gentleman...

I just took some pictures of him laying down in the field (he is definitely comfortable with his new home) with his new buddy and will try and get them posted tomorrw.

Just a thought...maybe to get you thinking about why we do certain things...but why did you put shoes on him?  I rarely shoe my horses, and then only if necessary.  For instance, my little mare was working in a sand arena every day, so I finally had to put shoes on her to keep her from wearing her feet down to the nubs.  Tongue  When that situation was past, off came the shoes, and she did dressage, trail, jumping, you name it, and she was fine, and still working every day.  I've found that horses rarely need shoes, and then only in extenuating circumstances.  I always assume they don't and act accordingly if things change.

Definitely looking forward to your new pix.

i can answer this one  Wink

Mick's feet are pretty "new to the world."  He has spent his whole life on sand and snow; nothing harder than frozen sand ground before snow covers it. All of his under saddle work has been on similar sandy ground, or arena footing (also usually sand...).

At his new home, he is having to deal with hard ground and rocks most of the time, at work and in turnout. I can see that it could be better for him to have some protection on those tootsies and not let him get sore to go along with all of the other changes in his life.

Ingrid said it correctly... Mick has great feet but my area is known for its rocks and rough terrain... I put shoes on to protect his feet more than anything.  When he came off of the trailer he had perfect feet but after a week at my house they started to break.

If anything they are going to enhance his already great movement.  I also like him to have a little more support as we start training him to jump.

Congratulations on purchasing Mick!  As stated before, a lot of us watched him grow up, including myself  Grin

So, is Mick going to be a hunter or jumper?  Maybe an all-arounder?

Unfortunately, not every horse can go forever without shoes.  I think Holly will be able to, it seems that after 7 years nothing can cause her hoofs to chip.  I told the barn owner she could use Holly in a few lessons while we were on vacation last week, she jumped in three lessons and her hooves look as good as ever.  However, I think Delilah may need shoes when we start to do some more intense work.  She did have a few chips after our trail ride a few weeks ago  Undecided

I do the same thing with front shoes and jumping - it just helps them!  And while some horses can get away with no shoes, there are just some that need them.  I have a 25 year old Insterruf gelding that is 17 hh.  He is basically retired (still gets ridden and even shown sometimes, but really he is the "babysitter" more than the riding horse) and he HAS to have 4 shoes on.  I tried to go without and within 2 weeks he was 3 legged lame.  Just too big, too heavy, to go without shoes.  Trust me, my pocketbook would rather go without that bill every 6 weeks, but he has earned the right to be sound and have shoes.

Mick is a very nice horse and I'm sure that you are going to have a blast together!

I intend to use him for the hunters but sometimes horses have different ideas... He is a lovely jumper and seems to like it so we will see how it goes.

Here are a few pictures.  I am not good at loading them so bear with me...

Awww, Mick looks so comfy and at home!!!!!! Cute cute cute.

Not every horse can go barefoot!  Though I'm not sure that size has a whole lot to do with it.  My husbands horse (Georgian Grande) is approaching 17 hands and can go 25 miles w/o shoes over sand/rocks/mud/grass etc at an average of 5 to 7 mph.  It may very well be the hoof quaility and the type of environment the hoof has been exposed to that lets it be tough or crumble.  A lot of folks have picked on TB feet, though in reality, it is the TB shoeing practices that create those crumbly hooves.

Blessing to you with Mick---I hope you have all your dreams come true together!!!!!!!!!! Cheesy

Hey, you are not that far from me, maybe I will have to come see this Mick character in person.  His daddy was my pick for my mare to be bred too, he passed away the month before I bred and Paramoure's gracious owners honored his contract with Paramoure.  I REALLY love those lines and Paramoure did a WONDERFUL job with Bugs to produce Frodo, my little dream come true.
