When To Start Advertising
« on: April 06, 2006, 05:47:52 PM »

I have a coming 3-year-old Anglo-Trakehner filly. I've just moved her to a trainer who also takes the horses to shows, plus will do video tapes/pictures of your horse on her web site.  My question is how much training do you put into a horse you want to sell (to a good home) before you say "that's it>"?  A year?  How long does it take to decide if a horse is better suited for jumpers or dressage?  As you can see, I'm clueless. Huh  Thanks for any help.

I personally think a coming 3 yr old is too young for serious training.  I'd wait until 3-1/2 to 4 y.o. for under saddle, and then put in the training time.  You should be able to have a very well trained horse in 6 months, and so far as deciding on disciplines, well--sometimes they have the talent for both, but a desire for one over the other.  I don't like jumping a horse before they have a good solid foundation, so that for me is around 4-1/2 to 5 y.o., although you can certainly put them through chutes freejumping.  If they enjoy it, and their bloodlines are good for jumping, I'd market both ways.

Joy, Thanks so much for your insight. Cheesy  I guess I am hurrying her too fast and should just slow down her training for another 6 months.

helloagain. Smiley  What you need to keep in mind is that warmbloods mature slowly.  You'll never regret giving your girl extra time, but you may very well regret not having done so.  Do you have a photo?

Hi Joy, I had some my daughter took, but they were in my computer and it crashed.  Of course I lost everything.  I'll try to get some more and see if I can post it.   Cheesy

I lost my files once, only once, when my hard drive crashed.  Now I back up to a second hard drive daily, weekly, and monthly.  There's just no replacing those photos.  Once they're gone, they're gone.  Sniff. Cry
