Lara's mare Danz, a beautiful Mozart-daughter in foal to Herzzauber, is apparently losing the foal and in a life-threatening condition herself. I haven't spoken to Lara yet, but all of you who know her should keep her and her horse in your prayers. She's a great friend to me and I'm heartbroken, desperately trying to find out more.....

Lara, I really hope that Danz is doing okay and am wishing for the best. What happened to her? I really hope this turns out okay, I know how much you love her and how hard you've worked on earning her trust. We are all thinking of you!
Heather (and Aerron of course!)

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers guys, I really appreciate it. Things are not great, but better than expected. The foal is still alive and well in the womb, 80 beats/minute, kicking and looking BIG.. I think he pinned his ears at the ultrasound haha. There is no problem with the placenta or the uterus and everything reproductive looks absolutely healthy and normal. The thing that looked like placental detachment during rectal U/S is actually small intestinal edema due to bacteria. Danz' lungs also show pneumonia. She had a cold in late summer, so it is thought the bug transferred then to both areas developing this mess. So here we stand.. I am treating her with Pen and Gen, plus Banamine and staying on the Regumate. Hopefully foal can live through the toxicity until these kick in and white count is back to normal. Both mom and dad are very strong, tough horses, so I am hopeful little one can weather the storm. This is of course all new to me and Jim. We are doing all we can and thank God we have a great vet who is willing to spend lots of time educating. The other vets in the clinic were actually calling in to see the subcutaneous U/S results yesterday - what a group. We are truly blessed with the best we could hope for. Jim and I believe this is no small miracle, and hold much hope for not only mom, but baby too. I have learned so much about breeding and pregnancy on my first time out, it is amazing. I thought we would have to retire Danz if she made it, but now looks like she's a trooper in the mom department! Thanks again for all your thoughts, prayers and support. Oh, yeah - I got a good taste of barn living this past week - kudos to all you breeders out there. Camera is definitely in order for foal time... Lara
