I LOVE Trakehners!
|
Hello,
I have a very nice Trakehner broodmare who is also MMB Oldenburg (and has been producing wonderful premium Oldenburg foals). For the upcoming season I would like to go with a Trakehner. I've researched all those standing in the US and I have a few favorites - Pyatt Charlie, Timotheus, Feuertanzer, Windfall. My mare has no Mahagoni or Flaneur blood in her pedigree (her pedigree is at http://www.dmtc.com/pedigree/allbreed/ under Luminare.
To make my decision even more complicated I would like to consider some of the stallions standing in Germany - I get the Oldenburg magazine from Germany, but nothing about Trakehners (aside from those who are used as Oldenburgs) so I'm not up on the most successful bloodlines (available in the US through agents). I'm breeding a dressage horse for my own personal use, so I need good conformation, a good disposition and solid gaits. The mare produced a fantastic foal by a Rohdiamont son (double Inschallah) - so I'm probably looking for the Trakehner equivalent of the 'R" Oldenburg line. Ideas and suggestions appreciated.
Cheryl

Hi Cheryl,
I've also done trak and OLD breeding with my trak mare.
Which parts of the Rohdiamant do you think worked well - as a refiner, in the front legs, in the temperament?? It's difficult to say without knowing which bits you think worked well...
I think that a lot of the best Trak stallions in Germany are approved OLD or HANN anyway (although I might get shot for saying that here!!)... Tuareg has great breeding indices on trak mares and great rideability and is available through Groenwaldhof (where Donnerhall stood). The Sixtus line is, as a group, probably my favourite at the moment - Buddenbrock, Connery, Axis, Donauwalzer, Peron Junior and and and... I've heard good things about the foals from Key West (Klosterhof Medingen) who has lots of anglo arab blood if that is the influence you think has worked with Rohdiamant and he is full brother to last years champion K2. If you want to give any other info about what you are looking for (or don't want!) I'll look in my books to see what comes up!

Agree with Tamsin, if you think the Inschallah AA worked well with your mare, Key West of K2 are a total must!! It basically depends on which color you like better, grey or black/brown :-)
Very sadly, Paytt Charly died lately. Windfall is another good source for TB and AA blood (dam is TB, sire Habicht is by Burnus AAH). Contact his owner Tim Holekamp (also here on the forum) for more info, he is a knowledgable source for Windfall babies!!
The Marduc-Anduc blood is top dressage blood and available in the US, Happy Hour (Owner Renee is on this forum too), the elite stallion Herzzauber, Hailo at Valhalla Farm etc).
Feuertänzer is also carrying good dressage blood, mainly through his sire Martini, a son of Cocktail (who again is Habicht) ruled supreme at the USDF standings for many years. Feuer's first kids are coming 2 year olds, I think. Might be intersting to look at them.
Since your mare has no Mahagoni connection, look at a few from that line, if you like younger stallions, I recommend looking at Incantare at Valhalla (Enrico-Martini) or the newly approved Kovington (Enrico-Schwalbenherbst), owned by Kumi Smedley (I can provide email, if you wish).
And again, agree with Tamsin on everything Sixtus, it's THE line in Germany right now.
Good luck!!

What happened to Pyatt Charlie? He was such a handsome boy!

And produced some outstanding foals, even better than himself. From what Sherry told me he had to be put down. Neck problems :-(

Charly had a spinal cord injury. We have two mares bred to Charly. One is an Onasis mare due in March. The other is a PSB TB mare that Sherry helped us with . She would not get in foal with another stallion and as a last ditch effort Sherry let us breed to Charly and the foal is due around June 15th. It is probably the last Charly baby. We are very excited about the foals, and brokenhearted that we will not be able to make more.

<<Btw, Maren meant C-o-c-k-tail, but the filter made it look like Cocktail. >>
Oh my gosh, I read "thingytail" and laughed so hard....
I just edited the filters so that we can use proper terminology for body parts, as it would be hard to have some breeding and reproductive health discussions without being able to use them. Also, we can now say "Cocktail"!
Sorry about that guys

I owned Pyatt Charly and I miss him terribly-we have some frozen semen--but it is pricey--I'm wanting to save it for myself. I believe we have just bought another stallion from Germany--totally different lines--and as disloyal as it sounds, I think he may be even better than Charly--this colt is a Sixtus son--and approved in Germany--let me know if you think we can serve

I must admit that the Pyatt Charley foals that I have seen were of premium status. Pyatt although a very good horse, he threw much better than himself. Isn't that what a stallion supposed to do? Congrats on your new acquistion Sherry!
