I'm hoping ya'll will send some vibes for my TB mare. She's been diagnosed with EPM and is currently on double doses of Marquis but not yet showing improvement. We did single doses for the first week without much effect and started double dosing on Friday. My vet is hinting that it might not be worth the cost to continue for much longer. I'm not ready to give up so fast. I don't want cost to be a consideration but it may eventually be. She is the mother of my two Hennessy daughters and an absolute joy. She can been seen here: http://web.centre.edu/dajones/equine.htm
Thanks!
Deb in KY
P.S. This has already meant that I am starting the 3 yo myself and it's pretty much taking up the money I might have used to go to the convention.

Thanks Amy! You are more than welcome to come stay with me in KY and help with Sindarin. She's been a bit ignored recently but we had been making progress and I had been planning to take her to a friends and climbing on with other people around. That's been put on hold as I've been sick for a couple of weeks (bad cold, no energy, coughing, etc). I spoke with another vet in the clinic that suggests doing Marquis as long as I can and doing some SMZ's at the same time and eventually just doing the SMZ's. He encouraged patience to see if she came around. I figure if she just recovers enough to be safe in the pasture, she's earned that much.

Deb,
Keep your chin up. If she has not been infected for years, you will probably see improvement with the meds. I have heard of a lot of horses coming through this with patience and proper treatment.
Best of luck.

Good luck, Deb.
With EPM and other neurological disorders it is beneficial to push high doses of vitamin E (like 10-20,000 units). That will help the neurological tissues. 5-10 grams Vitamin C fed with it will help to "antioxidize the antioxidant," helping the vitamin E stay useful longer. Just buy people vitamin E at Sam's, Costco, or Vitamin World, and get some vitamin c powder or granules (can get it from Uckele, different livestock stores, or as a people supplement packaged by NOW Foods).

Thanks for the hint. I'm supplementing E but not C. I'll check on it. A second vet in the clinic recommended starting SMZ's at the same time and a red blood cell booster. I simply can't afford to continue double doses of Marquis for too long. His thought was we could continue to hit hard with the Marquis for a little longer and then lower the dose of that and continue the SMZ's, eventually switching over to SMZ's.
On a Trakehner note. I've been watching my 3 anglo-traks and, knock wood, so far so good. My 14 yo Falke daughter was dragging her feet the other day so I watched her carefully. Her back leg itched so she bent herself in a U and stayed that way for a while chewing on all her itches. I decided she didn't have a balance issue.

Just a request to keep up the vibes. Mare has gone backward a bit. I'm starting to ask myself if I'm treating her for her or for me.

I put Spence down yesterday morning. Friday night she seemed lethargic but went out to graze. Saturday morning, her eyes seemed dull but she ate her breakfast. Saturday night, she went down and couldn’t get up. My neighbor called a local vet for me and we put her down Sunday morning. We shared an apple while waiting for him to get here. At least she was being a horse and going out to graze as late as Friday night and she left me two wonderful Anglo-Trak fillies.
I've put a bit of a tribute to her on my web site. If you can, take a moment to send her on her way.

Deb, I'm so sorry to hear about your mare. It's always hard to put down a horse (or any animal, for that matter). To have it happen from a problem like this rather than old age is even harder. I'm so sorry for your loss.
