Announcing--a new filly
« on: May 16, 2006, 09:11:53 AM »

Born approximately 1:10 a.m.  By Pissarro (Impressionist) out of Winsome Angel (IAHA).  She's the tiniest little thing--like a little pixie horse.  She's still having a hard time getting up on her own.  She just can't seem to figure out what to do with those front legs, and when she does, she can't get her hind legs under her, plus she's way down in the pasterns (Arab trait?).  But when she gets a little bit of help, she nurses well, and walks around for a while before she collapses and sleeps for a bit.

I was hoping I'd get some sleep now, but she'll need attentioni until she gets her legs figured out, and since it's still raining here in the Northeast, she'll be stall bound, which will give her legs time to stregthen as well.  Here's a photo or two taken at an hour old.

My goodness, Joy, she surely is cute!  She has a darling look on her face, like, "where am I?"  Who'd turned on that light?  Turn it back off!!!!!  Maybe she wanted to stay in comfort of moma a little longer....like sleeping in???  Congrats to you, Joy!  I'm so happy to hear everyone is doing well...sounds like you are going to need a Saturday morning sleep-in for sure...
~Blessings to you~

I'm almost beside myself because the filly is almost 13 hours old and still cannot stand without help.  Once up, she's fine--she just can't get up.  She doesn't seem to know what to do with her legs.  Has anyone else had a foal like this?  Please let me know what you did, whether it's a lack of selenium, Vit E, or something else altogether.

Congratulations Joy, what a little doll she is.  Kiss

We have had a foal have trouble standing up before.  We had to help her get up for two days.  Once standing, she could motor around without problems.  She just couldn't seem to figure out how to get her long legs under her to get up.  She finally developed a type of technique where she would flip her legs under her and get up.  After that, no problems getting up any more.  Then after she grew a little (like a few weeks or so), she started getting up like everybody else and discarded her special flip technique.  ;-)

I bet your filly will figure it out soon too.

Congrats again - hope you get some sleep soon. :-)

Joy, she sure is CUTE!!!  Pissaro is the Imp son that is approved RPSI isn't he??  How exciting!

As for the getting up thing.... I haven't experienced that (thank GOODNESS!), but am sending you jingles that she figures it all out on her own.  I assume that you have contacted the vet?  Are they concerned?  I'm always a little paranoid though, I'm sure that she will be fine!  It is prob just from being in the belly for so long, she is still all "folded up"  Grin

The filly who was born the same year as Frodo had trouble getting up on her own for about 2 or 3 days.  We just kept helping her up and each time trying to get her to do more work herself and she eventually figured out the legs and was fine.

Congratulations!  She is adorable!

Joy, my mare was born early and had some minor difficulty standing.  So, yes, she did get a vitamin shot, but I do not remember what.  She was slow but OK with getting up and down, but had to brace her hocks together to stand.  And it took her three weeks to the day to figure out how to trot and to kick.  She got the canter in couple days.

And I wouldn't worry about being "down the pasterns"  that goes away fairly soon as the leg structures strengthen, and it's not an "Arab thing".

Congrats again on a really cute little girl!   Cheesy

Joy,
Congratulations on a beautiful little girl!  Such a face!!  I don't have any experience with the standing issue, but I have heard of it.  It has always resolved within a few days.  I'm sure yours will as well.

Congrats, again,
Eileen

Yes, Pissarro is approved RPSI.

I've just about decided on Pixie Magic for a name, she's such a little thing and such a sprite!  Pixie for sure for a barn name.  She's much stronger today, even tries to buck and canter a little, stays up much longer, and sleeps longer.  She nickers to me when I come in, as if to say "What took you so long to get here?  Didn't you see I was struggling?"  A little boost and sometimes a hint on unfolding those front legs, and she's up and heating for the breakfast bar.

I'm glad to hear that this will all work itself out.  I did have the vet out yesterday and she checked her over thoroughly and said everything is within normal range.  And my wonderful neighbors came to the barn to help her up from 7:00 until midnight last night so I could get some sleep.  Horse people are wonderful!

Joy - are you sure Pissaro was Approved? I had heard he was recorded SBII by the RPSI.
If this is true, then it is really good news!  He is out of a mare by my old stallion Meistersinger (dec).

And now she's getting up by herself!  Yea!

To Suzette:  On checking, you're correct.  Stallion Book II, which means his foals get a COP.

What exactly is the purpose of SBII if it isn't an approval?

SBII with the RPSI is like the ATA Appendix book. It is for stock that is not Approved for breeding.
It was created in ALL the registries in Europe due to a legal requirement that was instituted due to the creation of the European Union. (or at least that is my understanding of the situation).  ALL registries in Europe MUST list any stallion that has been presented to it in thier books - even if not Approved. So they created SBII to list these horses in. The foals get a COP.

Can those stallions be upgraded if they have an outstanding performance record? Not that approval matters here, since I'll probably keep this filly.  I could part with a colt, but I hate parting with mares, and this filly is out of my favorite mare.

Yes, but it depends on the reason they were put in SBII. If they were put into it because of bloodline issues, then those won't go away. But if they are put in SBII for scoring reasons, and later go on to "prove" themselves, then they can re-apply for Approval at a later date.
A filly with a COP can also be upgraded a level at her Studbook inspection - though it may take a few generations to make SBI. Not sure of the exact requirements. But that's the reason that people want the COP - for a few generations down the road.  A colt with a COP isn't stallion-eligible.

Congratulations, Joy!  What a neat ziggy little blaze she had, and what a nice end to all of your foal-watching! Have you got any more recent pix?

But only 34 or 35 inches tall!  None of the foal halters I have fit her, so ... I bought her a Mini halter.  It's on the smallest size.  Truly, those Arab genes are STRONG!

Joy,  So glad to see that your girl is getting stronger.  Looks like she will be fine.  Congratulations!  And even if you found a halter to fit her, she appears to be growing so fast, she might outgrow it soon.  Keep us apprised of her progress.

Okay, I'm unabashedly in love with this filly.  Cheesy   I couldn't resist these pics of Pyxie having a lazy day yesterday, when the sun finally came out (after a week of rain).

And two more--she thought about getting up, but decided that it was much easier to nibble while closer to the ground. Roll Eyes
