Mondavi by Feuertanzer out of an arabian mare just won big at his first show. It was a rated arabian show and he won his half arab sporthorse class as well as Res. Champion. He also created lots of positive buzz among the arab folks who are increasingly seeking Trak/arab crosses for their popular sporthorse classes. Mondavi was purchased by a local and very successful dressage trainer to be her personal dressage horse, so this is just the beginning for him. As Mondavi's breeder, I couldn't be happier with his new home and his progress so far. They are planning on showing at the Arabian Sporthorse Nationals this year as well. Here is a link to some show photos of Mondavi: http://public.fotki.com/cxmings/ahanc_2006/sport_horse_in_hand/dsc_7782.html
He is about to turn 2 years old and is going to mature at 16+ hands.
Thanks for letting me brag about my homebred "baby"!

He is LOVELY, SERIOUSLY! Are you going to do that cross again? One question, what kind of AYrab was the mare? Meaning, Polish, Egyptian... I ask because I visited a barn today where the BO had a Polish Arab, and an Egyptian Arab. I could not help but notice the Polish guy! He just seemed an ideal cross to a Trakehner. (He was a gelding, but I was thinking about his type) I really liked him, and was surprised at how much I did. I do NOT have a problem with Arabs, whatsoever, but my experiences, looking back on them, have mostly been with Egyptian Arabs. (Not that there is ANYTHING wrong with Egyptians, I don't want to step on anyone's toes.) This Polish Arab looked very athletic, I'd love to have a Polish mare like him to cross to a Trakehner stallion.

Hi Amy - yes, the mare was rebred to Feuer after Mondavi was born, but I sold her last year when I was "in foal" and had too much morning (all day actually) sickness to foal out any mares. Luckily, I have access to many half/three quarter siblings to that mare so when I'm ready, I can likely breed more like Mondavi. I too love the polish lines if they are tall and typey enough. Mondavi's dam was not polish - she carried a little egyptian and Bey Shah through the sire line. She was quite short at only 14.3 but big barreled and a nice mover. Even though she was an arab, she was very much a similar type to Feuer in her body. Feuer has many other nice half arabs just like Mondavi out there. His daughter Persnickety is even more impressive and, interestingly, that mare was also a Bey Shah granddaughter. I found that interesting, as Bey Shah is known as mostly a halter horse sire which couldn't be further from my breeding goals. However, both mares were not halter types themselves at all so the result is definitely a riding/performance type. Good arabians can cross wonderfully but certainly you have to be more careful. I also love some of the shagya arab/Trak crosses Feuer has sired. If you like the polish, you will probably love the shagyas! They have the size and more substance.

Polish are also similar in type to CMK, and both have been traditionally bred for riding, looking for heavier bone, strong body, etc. You don't see the flat croup, for example, in CMK/Polish bred Arabs.
I have a friend who breeds Davenport Arabians (old desert lines, preservation breeding), and they are very different in type from Egyptian lines, and unfortunately, a lot of American bred Arabians have deviated far from the original stock. Davenport breeders will recognize CMK, but they balk at the Polish-breds, saying they're not pure. Maybe not, but they're lovely anyway.
I agree, Jennifer, Shagyas are gorgeous. If you want size and Arabian type, Shagyas are it.

Viva la double registration! Showing in both open and half-arab shows doubles your pleasure, doubles your fun, and seems to increase re-sale value. And the Arab people sure know how to promote their breed (the influence of the guy who went to FEMA?). I was scouting out an Arab show in Oklahoma City recently & I believe a good Arab/TK could take any sport horse class (& there were some nice horses there). The Arab people also seem to show hunters the way they should be shown (not at all like the QH people). As to the different lines of Arabs, my Arab breeder friend was disappointed to learn that the mare I'd bought was by an Asil Egyptian Arabian (supposedly the purest desert line). She was a Crabbet/Polish fan. But my mare's sire was selected for sport horse traits for several generations and is very athletic and suited to the sport. I suspect it's the same with any line, breeders can select any line to fit a particular sport. I knew people in CO who linebred Witez II arabians for cutting & they looked like quarter horses. So while bloodlines are indispensable one should also consider what the breeder is trying to accomplish. Anyway, nothing could be finer than a good sized Arab/TK, & the Feurtanzer baby looks awesome. Blessings, Steve +
